They lied. Ebola study says a dozen more were hospitalized during Dallas outbreak than was revealed More people than the public knew were hospitalized for possible Ebola exposure during Dallas’ outbreak, a new study says. Last fall, only two people were known to be hospitalized here after potentially contracting the often-fatal disease from a Liberian traveler. They were the nurses who tested positive. At the time, it was not revealed that an additional dozen people, nine of them health care workers, came down with Ebola-like symptoms while being monitored for possible exposure. The report said they developed fevers, headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. http://www.dallasnews.com/news/metro/20150526-new-ebola-study-says-a-dozen-more-hospitalized-in-dallas-outbreak-than-revealed.ece |

Ebola cases drop, but battle remains in two tough hot spots The number of confirmed Ebola infections in Guinea and Sierra Leone fell last week on the heels of a steep rise, continuing a jagged pattern that signifies challenges in the outbreak that has now passed the 27,000-case threshold, the World Health Organization (WHO) said today. http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2015/05/ebola-cases-drop-battle-remains-two-tough-hot-spots |

WHO warns that Ebola crisis isn’t over PARIS, MAY 28 – The World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday warned against complacency about the deadly Ebola virus, saying that the crisis isn’t over. “We have to keep our guard up,†Sylvie Briand, head of epidemiology at the UN’s health agency, told a stock-taking meeting on Ebola in Paris. Briand said the situation in Guinea, one of the three West African states where Ebola has killed more than 11,000 people, left her “deeply concerned.†Briand warned against hopes that a line could be drawn under the epidemic. stressing that “the crisis isn’t overâ€. “I am afraid there could be another wave that could spread to neighbouring countries,†she said. https://www.capitalfm.co.ke/news/2015/05/who-warns-that-ebola-crisis-isnt-over/ |

PARIS, MAY 28 – The World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday warned against complacency about the deadly Ebola virus, saying that the crisis isn’t over. No. It will take time, just as the Ebola started. Slowly, slowly. Dr Tolbert Nyenswah head of Ebola Response in Liberia said about 3 months ago. "It's not over until it's over." A problem is that some people do secret burials and even transport dead bodies in cars together with some healthy people. That makes it very difficult to track infected persons and track down which people he/she had Contact with. |

Ebola treatment with ZMapp cocktail expected in 2015 ZMapp is a blend of three monoclonal antibodies — chemicals that block the Ebola virus from invading a cell. Monoclonal antibodies are engineered in a lab to mimic how our immune systems naturally respond. rOZZ Music Pictures |

The most predictable disaster in the history of the human race. http://www.vox.com/2015/5/27/8660249/gates-flu-pandemic "Look at the death chart of the 20th century," he says, because he's the kind of guy that looks at death charts. "I think everybody would say there must be a spike for World War I. Sure enough, there it is, like 25 million. And there must be a big spike for World War II, and there it is, it's like 65 million. But then you'll see this other spike that is as large as World War II right after World War I, and most people, would say, 'What was that?'" |

Ebola will return, warns expert Paris - Congolese expert Jean-Jacques Muyembe may be little known to the public, but he has been one of the world's top Ebola investigators since the first epidemic erupted in central Africa in 1976. Now, amid a decline in a west African outbreak that has taken more than 11 000 lives, Muyembe warns that Ebola will strike again in the future and that the deadly virus poses “a threat to the whole worldâ€. http://www.iol.co.za/news/africa/ebola-will-return-warns-expert-1.1865472 |

Stop “criminal†Ebola vaccines trial in Ghana - Coalition The Coalition for Ghana’s Independence Now (CGIN) has said it is “disappointed†in the Ghana government for allowing its citizens to be used for an Ebola vaccines trial. A few days ago, Starrfmonline.com broke the news that the University of Health and Allied Sciences is spearheading the project which is expected to kick off at Hohoe in the Volta region soon. The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has confirmed to Starrfmonline.com it is currently testing the vaccine before it can give the green light for the trial to take off. Officials have already approached students of the Hohoe Midwifery Training School to volunteer for the trial. http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/artikel.php?ID=360308 |

Stop “criminal†Ebola vaccines trial in Ghana - Coalition Why don't Medical companies listen to what people in Africa says? “We want to say without fear or favor that, Ebola is not just a disease but rather a well-planned business. A business where people have created an artificial problem and now looking for a market to sell the solution and we are telling Ghanaians beforehand that there is and will be no way by which Ghana can go through this Ebola virus human experiment without Ebola being spread country wide.†“We also would want Ghanaians to know that, since there is no a single case of Ebola or patient in Ghana, healthy people would have to be infected with the Ebola virus before the said vaccine is administered to them for a gamble. “It is therefore from the above illogical scenario that we consider the intended human experimentation of Ebola in Ghana as criminal, human right abuse, thievery and a total disrespect of Ghanaians as human beings.†|

video with link. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-32930892 Ebola crisis: The tree thought to be the source of outbreak The Ebola outbreak in West Africa was first reported in March 2014, and has rapidly become the deadliest occurrence of the disease since its discovery in 1976. In fact, the current epidemic sweeping across the region has now killed more than 11,130 people - five times more than all other known Ebola outbreaks combined. Award-winning filmmaker Dan Edge has been investigating why the spread of Ebola was not curtailed sooner. |

UN: Sierra Leone to be Ebola free in 'matter of weeks' Sierra Leone will be free of the Ebola virus in a "matter of weeks", but stopping the deadly disease in Guinea will take more time, the United Nations' Ebola chief said. Speaking in New York on Monday, Dr David Nabarro said the overall outbreak of the virus in West Africa would end "in the foreseeable future". http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2015/06/sierra-leone-ebola-free-matter-weeks-150602044221757.html |

video with link. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-32930892 Last Sunday they aired it here and in the UK. The west African Ebola outbreak appears to be in abeyance, having killed thousands. As this fine, thoughtful documentary by Dan Edge demonstrates, it would be optimistic to assume that Ebola will never command headlines again. The film traces the most recent outbreak back to the father of so-called Patient Zero – the first fatality of the recent outbreak – and meets local officials and international aid workers still trying to figure out what they could and should have done better. "Outbreak" complete. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/outbreak/ Some thinks megabats or fruit bats are the cause of the Ebola outbreak. |

Why didn’t Ebola spread inside this Dallas apartment? After he became sick with Ebola, Thomas “Eric†Duncan shared brief hugs with five people, a residence with four people and a bed with one person as his condition steadily worsened. http://thescoopblog.dallasnews.com/2015/06/why-didnt-ebola-spread-inside-this-dallas-apartment.html/ |

Zoloft as Ebola cure? Antidepressant is one of a number of promising drugs being looked at by scientists. What if the cure for Ebola were already in your local pharmacy? That's the question that Gene Olinger and his colleagues are trying to answer in a project funded by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and National Institutes of Health. Working off a list of Food and Drug Administration-approved, "off the shelf" drugs and adding in other common small molecules such as metals, herbs and food additives, the researchers came up with 2,700 promising compounds. They tested each in cell cultures and found that 171 appeared to have some antiviral activity against Ebola. http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2015/06/03/zoloft-as-ebola-cure-anti-depressant-is-one-of-a-number-of-promising-drugs-being-looked-at-by-scientists/ |

In the news.. MERS, SARS, Ebola: How dangerous are they? An infectious disease with an exotic name has again captured public attention. This time, the virus isn't Ebola, but MERS, or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. South Korea has quarantined 1,369 people and has closed hundreds of schools in an effort to control the disease. The outbreak has now infected 35 people, said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2015/06/03/mers-south-korea-quarantine/28406489/ |

After Ebola, world still unprepared for global pandemic: MSF The global health system is unable to handle another mass epidemic like the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, Médecins Sans Frontières said, urging wealthy nations to develop coordinated response plans and drugs to fight neglected diseases. Late and slow international response, the absence of solid leadership as well as the lack of treatments and vaccines are a recurrent scenario in many of today's health emergencies and are not unique to the Ebola epidemic, the medical charity said. http://www.foxnews.com/health/2015/06/04/after-ebola-world-still-unprepared-for-global-pandemic-msf/ |
