Ebola crisis prompts $100m WHO emergency fund

The World Health Organization is to set up a $100m (£63m) emergency contingency fund following the Ebola outbreak, its director-general has announced.

Speaking in Geneva, Margaret Chan said the WHO had been overwhelmed by the epidemic in West Africa.

She said the demands were more than 10 times greater than anything else it had experienced.

Ebola will not go quietly, says WHO official after rise in cases

Guinea and Sierra Leone have reported 35 new Ebola cases in the past week, four times as many as the week before, in a reminder that the virus “will not go quietly”, a World Health Organisation official has said.

“It will take an extraordinary effort to finish the job,” the WHO’s special representative for Ebola, Bruce Aylward, told a briefing attended by health ministers.

Judge questions hospital company’s motive in Ebola nurse’s lawsuit

A judge says documents that weren’t turned over to nurse Nina Pham’s attorneys could be damaging to the company Pham is suing after she contracted Ebola.

In a hearing Monday, state District Judge Martin Hoffman said that if the documents had been improperly withheld by Texas Health Resources or its insurance company, he could impose sanctions.

Orphans who survived Ebola in Sierra Leone are starving to death amid harvest shortages and some are being forced into the sex industry to pay for food.

Researchers from British charity Street Child warn the situation will deteriorate if seeds are not distributed before the rains begin this month and planting becomes possible.

The charity, which has already received distressing reports of children dying due to a lack of food in rural parts on the country, has estimated there to be 12,000 orphans, many of whom are now forced to look after themselves.

Guinea reports spike in Ebola cases with 27 sick, police say families transporting corpses

CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) — Relatives of Ebola victims are transporting their bodies on public transportation in Guinea, seating the corpses upright between other passengers to skirt health controls and contributing to the spread of the deadly disease here, authorities said.

The Ebola epidemic began in Guinea and, instead of being snuffed out as officials had hoped, at least 27 new cases have occurred in a week's time, marking a significant spike.

George Galloway sent package ‘infected with deadly virus EBOLA’

The office of the former Respect MP for Bradford West was put into quarantine while specialist officers removed the parcel.

A handkerchief which was said to be infected had been posted to the office with a creepy note saying it had been taken from an Ebola victim in West Africa.

There have been more than 26,000 cases of Ebola, with more than 11,000 deaths recorded.

Vaccines developed for H5N1, H7N9 avian flu

A group of U.S. researchers say it has developed a vaccine for two strains of avian influenza that can be transmitted from poultry to humans.

The strains have led to the culling of millions of chickens and turkeys as well as the death of hundreds of people.

Jürgen Richt, the director of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Center of Excellence for Emerging and Zoonotic Animal Diseases, and his colleagues focussed on the avian influenza virus subtype H5N1 in wild birds in the U.S.

The team says it developed a vaccine for H5N1 by cloning the Newcastle disease virus that affects poultry and transplanted a small section of the H5N1 virus into it.

Sierra Leone marks grim Ebola anniversary

Freetown (AFP) - On May 24 last year a pregnant woman and an older housewife staggered into Kenema hospital in eastern Sierra Leone and were diagnosed within a day as the country's first Ebola cases.

The younger patient lost her baby but both were lucky to survive a virulent tropical virus which over the following 12 months laid waste to the country, leaving nearly 4,000 people dead.

N.J. patient dies of Ebola-like Lassa fever after Liberia trip

A man has died in New Jersey of Lassa fever, a disease similar to Ebola, after traveling in Liberia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health officials say the risk to the public is "extremely low" because Lassa fever doesn't spread easily. The death rate for Lassa fever is 1%, compared to the 70% mortality rate seen in Ebola patients, the CDC said.
