Dallas health department was under-equipped to handle Ebola alone, says chief epidemiologist

WASHINGTON—Dallas’ head disease expert said Tuesday that the city’s health department was unequipped to handle last year’s Ebola scare on its own.

Wendy Chung, chief epidemiologist for Dallas County Health and Human Services, said her team lacked the resources it needed to track and manage the Ebola outbreak. Without enough staff or proper infrastructure, her team needed significant help from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Too many dying in Sierra Leone as result of Ebola response not virus itself – report

Too many people are dying in Sierra Leone not from Ebola but as a result of the response to it, according to a report on the collapse of healthcare in the west African country.

Ebola has killed at least 3,900 people in Sierra Leone so far, but the epidemic has critically damaged the ability of the country’s limited healthcare system to cope with anything else, including soaring HIV and tuberculosis rates.

WHO wants to identify all West African Ebola cases by June



LONDON — The World Health Organization says it aims to identify and isolate all new Ebola cases in West Africa by the end of May to stop the spread of the lethal virus before the rainy season.

In a new Ebola plan released on Tuesday, the UN health agency said it hopes to limit transmission of the virus to the coastal areas of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone before the rainy season begins, normally in April or May.

Fiancée of First U.S. Ebola Victim Can 'No Longer Sleep at Night'


Dallas resident Louise Troh is breaking her silence on the death of her fiancé Thomas Eric Duncan – the first person to die of the Ebola virus in America on Oct. 8, 2014.

"I don't like thinking about it," Troh, 55, tells PEOPLE of the events that unfolded after Duncan arrived from Liberia to plan their wedding and, 10 days later, died of Ebola. "Just talking about it brings everything all back. It was all too much for me, for all of us."

Liberia Burials Key in Ebola Fight

The World Health Organization is set to declare Liberia Ebola free. It will make that declaration on May 9th if no new cases are reported. In a sign of how the situation has improved, the Liberian Red Cross has handed back responsibility for safe burials to the Ministry of Health.

Liberian woman appears to have contracted Ebola through sex with survivor

A Liberian woman appears to have contracted Ebola from unprotected sex with a man who survived the virus, health officials said today.

The 44-year-old woman was diagnosed March 20, the first new Ebola case in Liberia in a month. Doctors were perplexed by her case, because she hadn't been to a funeral or had any other contact with current patients, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Ebola Survivors Can Spread Disease Through Sex For Longer Than Previously Thought

NEW YORK (AP) — Health officials now think Ebola survivors can spread the disease through unprotected sex nearly twice as long as previously believed.

Scientists thought the Ebola virus could remain in semen for about three months. But a recent case in West Africa suggests infection through sex can happen more than five months later.

Based on the case, officials are now telling male Ebola survivors to avoid unprotected sex indefinitely. They had previously advised using condoms for at least three months.

Suspected Ebola case being treated in Düsseldorf

Fire services took the man from his home in the city of Bochum to the University Hospital in Düsseldorf, around 43 kilometers away (27 miles), on Sunday night.

He is currently receiving treatment in a special isolation unit, under strict security.

The unit can be totally sealed-off from contact with the outside world.

The hospital said it also has special facilities to catch and sterilize air, as well as waste water, to prevent the release of pathogens into the city's sewage system, ensuring "complete protection of patients, visitors and attending staff."

UN hails progress on Ebola as new weekly cases below 20

(Reuters) - The U.N. envoy on Ebola on Tuesday hailed "extraordinary progress" against the outbreak in West Africa after new cases last week fell below 20 for the first time since mid-2014, but he warned it would take time to end the epidemic completely.

David Nabarro said that in the week to May 3 only nine new cases were reported in Guinea and the same number in neighboring Sierra Leone. Liberia once again had no new cases.
