Yep, 'resend lost tasks' is still turned off. This host has 2 lost tasks attributed to it, the cache is empty yet there are still 2 tasks listed as in progress, http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=7258715. I've already cleared another host by detaching from the project and reattaching which resulted in 44 lost tasks being listed as Abandoned. Since the other host only has 2 lost tasks I'm going to let them just time out. Some hosts have Hundreds of lost tasks, one known host was in the thousands. It might make bookkeeping easier if these tasks were cleared from the database. I guess I've been fortunate, I've only had a couple of cases of lost tasks when the function was turned off. The only way I knew that's what happened was I got those exact messages in my log file. So, you'll pardon me if I choose not to defer to your expertise..... So, you'll pardon me if I choose not to defer to your expertise..... Well, you can mark this down in the ledger. When a task is lost and you don't have your preferences set to receive that task it will be Expired instead of Resent. The setting 'accept tasks from other applications' doesn't work, it has to be set for that certain application. It's called experience. What do you suppose is going on here if tasks aren't being resent? http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=7033569 With all those resends expiring in about 4 hours, do you think that 'puter is in Panic mode? ;-) |

So, you'll pardon me if I choose not to defer to your expertise..... But that was not the case for me. My "lost tasks" were S@H MBv7, my preferences were set to accept them, and they were still expired rather than resent. And the Windows boxes it happened on do not have a GPU, so that wasn't a factor either. What do you suppose is going on here if tasks aren't being resent? Yeah, those look like resends, and the shorties are probably running in Priority mode. Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |

So, you'll pardon me if I choose not to defer to your expertise..... Didn't you say your lost tasks happened while the server option to resend them was turned off? Yes, it's right there in Red. That's the idea behind resending lost tasks, instead of setting there waiting weeks to time out when the deadline is reached, they are dealt with immediately. They are either scheduled to be resent as soon as there is room in the cache, or they are immediately expired if the preferences are not set to accept them. In your case it would appear they waited until the deadline was reached. In my case the deadline was still a month away, however, someone enabled 'resend' while my preferences were not set to accept them. Therefore, mine that still had a month on the deadline were immediately Expired as soon as the host contacted the server after the 'resend' option had been enabled. That host is still receiving resent lost tasks that are set to expire 4 to 5 hours after being resent. That's a dead give away, resent lost tasks have the same deadline as they did originally. It looks as though a few are expiring even as the host is working as many as possible. The Error number is increasing, up from the 152 it was earlier. I wonder how many days it will take the host to work through the remaining 1500 tasks. |

So, you'll pardon me if I choose not to defer to your expertise..... Yes, I'm quite familiar with the rationale behind resending lost tasks, and how it works. NO, my lost tasks did NOT wait until the deadline to be resent, I got the "Not resent - expired" message only a few hours after the original request that assigned them to me. And no, my preferences did not change between the two work requests - my Windows boxes are always set to accept both MB and AP tasks. That's what lead me to the conclusion that you were mistaken, and resends were still turned off. I did not realize that you played with your preferences, and that that could make a difference in how the resend function works. Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |

So, you'll pardon me if I choose not to defer to your expertise..... Maybe you should try having a task resent and see how it actually works. Between Beta and Main there must be about a half dozen posts by me explaining to people how to have their tasks resent as something else. Yes, you can have those CPU tasks resent by the server as GPU tasks and otherwise. As long as it's still AP or MB the device can be changed. All you have to do is change the preferences to accept either CPU or GPU tasks then lose the task. That comes in real handy when you are testing new apps and they don't work as expected. Instead of settling for an error because the app doesn't work with a certain setting you can just have the task resent and run it again with a setting that works. It's been done by a number of people for a number of years and works exactly the way I've described. I'm not sure what kind of problem you are having, because the dozens of times I've had tasks resent there wasn't a problem, as long as 'resend lost tasks' was enabled by the server. I suppose you missed all those times I've explained to people how to have a task resent, the posts are still around on these boards. |

Well, it is turned on, or at least it was I just ran a test on one of my machines to see if it still worked the way it has in the past. I chose to change a few MB Low Angle Range GPU tasks to CPU tasks. I needed CPU tasks on that host anyway. Seems to be working the way it always has, I now have 14 MB CPU tasks; Sat Apr 11 16:07:23 2015 | SETI@home | [sched_op] Starting scheduler request Sat Apr 11 16:07:23 2015 | SETI@home | Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. Ditto! It's running! Yay! My computer was getting bored here in Podunk. I'd even be happy to find a Martian version of I Love Lucy. Now that is being bored. Thanks all! Dave |

It's problem after problem with SETI nowadays, it was ages ago since it worked OK for more than a couple of days. I think "they" know "we" are getting close. Cheers, - David Vincent. |
