ET, is that you? Scientists launch plan to beam welcome messages to far-off star systems - and their planets which could bear life


Scientists are making plans to beam messages from Earth out into the universe, effectively cold-calling the solar system to find signs of other life.

Astronomers will transmit signals from radio telescopes to hundreds of other star systems in the hope of making groundbreaking discoveries.

The plan, put together by scientists at the Seti (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute in California, has been trumpeted as a major step in humanity's exploration of space.

I have new admiration for Stephen Hawking, since seeing the movie "The Theory of Everything".

I fully agree with Sten and Bob. I said much the same in This has probably been asked a thousand times..., and was met with much opposition from PwNz0R that he could not possibly conceive an alien race as traveling across the cosmos just to kill us. Quite worrisome, his position. :-/

If there is an alien species out there who runs contrary to the "default position of the egghead set"* and is both technologically sophisticated enough that we have no chance of defeating them, and are still merciless usurpers of other species' planets, then it's too late already to cower in the dark, as they would also be sophisticated enough that our leakage of everything from morse code crackles to thousands of simultaneous digital video broadcasts has been whetting their appetites for a century.

It is, but it's nigh-impossible for us to ever make those signals unbroadcast, so probably too late to worry. That ship has sailed, barn door horse etc.

Too true. I'm ok with those broadcasts which won't make it very far out anyway, than with an active, high powered signal beamed to a specific point saying "we're over here!"

Oh no, do NOT beam any messages to far-off systems, with any directional beams, and/or with high signal strength.

If those receiving the message are anything like the human race, (and they might very well be), the word CONQUER, is the first word that will come into their minds.

Know the aliens, by knowing the human race....

It's exactly why we very far from interstellar traveling. Natural selection in action. Only civilizations that not think like this could accumulate enough resources for such advancement. Civilizations like humans can only hear space silence and dream about conquers... being not able to explore even own star system fully.

Time to evolve, peoples!

Dr. Hawking has a very prudent mind. Because of his physical condition and his constant intertwinement with technology. My opinion is, the ones who do make it here are intelligent enough to not destroy anything. That would be a 'privilege' reserved for the human kind only for the moment:(

In order to be a threat to us, a supposed hostile extraterrestrial species would need the ability to travel interstellar distances. Such an ability seems to imply their managing the less technically demanding feat of receiving our routine, non-directed radio, radar and television signals.
As we have already realized, by using the focusing effect of the gravity of the local star, such signals could be received from throughout the galaxy.
The fact that we have not been conquered or destroyed by such a civilization, even though many of them would presumably have had a million or a billion year head start on us, seems to argue against this danger.
