I don't have time to research it right now, have to run off to work...but Lori just called and said that Good Morning America did a bit on TurboTax refunds being intercepted and that at least one state was shutting it down? I normally do my returns online via TT, and was going to do them tomorrow. Maybe whilst I am at work, some of you have some knowledge about this? Anybody else aware of problems with it? Meow? Here is the story for far, Mark. TurboTax halts state filings amid fraud outbreak TurboTax has turned off the ability of its software to e-file state tax returns across the USA Thursday after the company found "an increase in suspicious filings," the company said Friday. The tax-preparation software company has found an increase in criminal activity where stolen personal data is used to file fake state returns with state authorities. This illegal act allows fraudsters to claim tax refunds from state governments. An internal TurboTax investigation has found the breaches are not due to a problem with its own systems, but criminals digging up the personal information elsewhere. The company said the investigation is ongoing. Intuit says it's working with state tax officials to get the e-filing security back to where it needs to be to turn it back on. TurboTax customers who already e-filed their state returns don't have to do anything. The returns will be transmitted again when the problem is resolved, TurboTax says. The e-filing halt only affect state returns. Federal tax returns can still be filed electronically. http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/personalfinance/2015/02/06/turbotax-state-filings-halted/22979519/ |

Yes, real. Big time fraud was found. Lots of false claims being submitted, so the state said no more, shut it e-file down. It isn't TT's fault either. See the computers thread in politics for a possible reason. |

For the last many years, I have done my federal return with Block's online free service, then done the state myself (in Illinois, it's really easy once you have all the numbers from your federal return to plug into the state site, and Block charges for state returns). Last year, I went to a Block office (because I thought all my inheritances and stocks would be really complicated). The person there didn't really seem to know a whole lot, just punched the data I gave her into her computer and charged me an outrageous amount for it. I think I may have still done the state myself. This year, I was thinking I might try TT instead. But I think I will always do the state myself on the state site. I do my best math to avoid getting refunds in the first place. I've never liked the idea of letting Uncle Sam use my money as a free loan, plus I could die before the refund comes in. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

Don't know about TT (not Audi) LOL. I have been using TaxAct for some years now. My dad gets the regular updates each year. Already efiled and have my state refund. Expect federal in a few more days. Cost for filing? $20.00 USD. |

I just got done doing my returns via TurboTax. No apparent problems. As I read it, the news stories are about thefts that have already been made using TT software and spoofing user's accounts. So, any damage is not done when a legitimate user does their taxes with TT. It was via hacking already done. So, I just did what I have done for years. TT is a bit more than TaxAct...about $70.00 for both state and federal. But it's so easy for one like me that has trouble understanding this crap and keeping records. It keeps track of and fills in info from the previous year and my number deprived mind appreciates that. Meow.....for now. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Sounds great!!! :) Capitalize on this good fortune, one word can bring you round ... changes. |

Well... I got email that both my federal and state returns have been accepted by the taxing authorities. So no state fraud problems here. Now just have to watch for the results to show up in my bank account. Waiting is........................... "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

I used TT until 2000. In 1999, I had three jobs, in 2000 only one. Evenso I deleted the two extra W2s and reviewed the return and it looked good. Once I send it, it filled in the two W2s with the same data and thus tripled my income. That mess took month to fix. I find more errors with TT, then any other free software. As evidenced by others in this thread, there are other solutions. It is just what I started with online, it works well for me, and I have no reason to switch at this point. And it is not free.... I do my taxes on paper using only the software burned into the calculator. I need to file 1099 income and I am unsure if the simple software packages will allow you to do that so being cheap,I avoid the commercial packages. Funny thing is I owed taxes on my state return and I sent it off Feb 3. I received my bank statement today and the state check cleared Feb 4. They were a real hurry to get my money. |

--- snip --- They were a real hurry to get my money. Holy Cow! That state must be operating 24/7 with the checks being electronically deposited as fast as they arrive. |

--- snip --- They were a real hurry to get my money. The post office as well!!! - Arizona is the state. They didn't have the machine readable forms available so the form was processed by hand and they had to read my handwriting. |
