Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle are both members of the Friends of the English Regency. In the summer of 1979 was the World Science Fiction convention at Brighton, England. It was also the tenth anniversary of the marriage of Larry to Fuzzy Pink and they took advantage of the location to celebrate with members of the Friends who also were there. |

Ah Seacon 79, a great conference. my first and I enjoyed it a lot. The highlights for me were Listening to all the Hitcher's Guide to the Galaxy radio shows back-to-back. An all-night bar discussion between about 4 or 5 fans, Douglas Adams and Tom Baker at what I think was Tom's first Science Fiction Convention (Tom and Douglas were both very quick-witted, and held together a very long series of puns back and forward, keeping us all laughing until it really hurt) Lastly was a demonstration of the Fairlight by it's inventor, who then went on to support a set by Hawkwind (who were appearing not as themselves [free entrance], but as "Sparrowbreath") The 2 together blew my mind big time! I can still remember a lot of what went on there, amazing. Happy Crunching, Graham |

I did meet Niven and Pournelle and several others. There is a large overlap of science fiction people and Friends of the English Regency and the folk dance world. Part of the activity of Friends is having balls and dancing English Country dances. I have danced with Niven and Pournelle in the same sets. Some of the rehearsals took place at Niven's home. I also remember seeing Barbarella for the first time at that convention and being exposed to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Superman and Hitchhiker were both up for nomination for the Hugo award (and a couple of others) for best dramatic presentation. As each nominee was announced, the audience would applause with the greatest applause going to Hitchhiker. However, Superman won. When Christopher Reeve accepted the award he said something like he seemed to be wrong person standing there. |

Who has seen the Wind W. O. Mitchell (I would recommend this book as a very good read, and what I think is a great novel.) |

I think that if you have the time, you will find his stories to be delightful, and more than just a statement from the Canadian literary palette. I am not a writer, but if I was I would be thrilled if I could tell a story like he did. |

If I'd gotten to the thread about 3 posts earlier, I would have said: Anyone who is capable of being made ruler should on no account be allowed to do the job. (Or something like that.) (To summarize the summary of the summary: people are a problem.) David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

Sometimes your better rulers are the ones that don't want it and are forced into the position. |
