Ebola has killed about 9000 humans since june 2014.
Common flue kills up to 500.000 per year.
Malaria kills about 1 million persons per year.
That is 3000 per day!

TB still killing 4000 people with HIV each day, WHO reports.

1.5 [1.4–1.7] million people died of HIV-related illnesses worldwide in 2013

We really need som perspective about Ebola. Ebola killed 9000 people since June 2014. HIV/AIDS kills that many in just over 2 days.

In 2009 1.7 million people died from TB worldwide, including 380,000 people with HIV!
Yes Sten. I am more scared of TB and HIV then Ebola because it spreads more easily in all countries! My mother had TB (TBC) in the fourties.

Still,9,000 people wiped off the planet. Leaving children behind, very sad.

Ebola is on the decline, and that's good.

Ebola: UN health agency says large-scale vaccine trials under way in Liberia

3 February 2015 – The United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) announced today that the Ebola vaccine trials now under way in Liberia would start soon in Guinea and Sierra Leone, the two other most-affected countries in West Africa.

The agency also announced in Geneva today the appointment of Dr. Bruce Aylward as its Special Representative for Ebola Response.

Ebola outbreak: cases rise for 1st time this year, WHO says

Sierra Leone accounted for 80 of the 124 new cases of the disease confirmed in the week to Feb. 1, it said. Guinea recorded 39 cases while Liberia had just five.

(Reuters) - An internal investigation of an Ebola incident at a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention laboratory in December found that samples sent to a lower-security lab were "unlikely" to have contained live virus and posed no threat to staff, the CDC said on Wednesday.

* Disease has caused up to 95 percent mortality in children

* Clinicians agree to lift "no touch" policy if protected

* More than 16,000 children lost parents to Ebola, UNICEF says

GENEVA, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Authorities fighting Ebola must do more to tackle a high death rate among young children whose isolation from parents also causes great distress and deprives them of the extra care they need, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday.

Reporting on a meeting of clinicians from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, it said there was a consensus that the strict "no touch" policy for Ebola patients could be lifted if good measures are in place to protect health workers from infection.

Update on Ebola.

Researchers study epidemiology of Ebola Virus Disease to prevent future disease outbreaks

On Dec. 26, 2013, a two-year-old boy living in the Guinean village of Meliandou, Guéckédou Prefecture was stricken with a rare disease, caused by the filament-shaped Ebola virus.

The child is believed to be the first case in what soon became a flood-tide of contagion, ravaging the West African countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, infecting, according to the World Health Organization, over 21,000 cases as of Jan. 21, with nearly 9000 confirmed deaths--the actual toll likely much higher.

PH Ebola virus-free but threat persists
Despite the government’s success in preventing the entry of the Ebola virus, Acting Health Secretary Jenette Loreto-Garin on Monday warned health officials and workers involved in the prevention and control of emerging diseases not to be complacent.

Garin said that health officials and workers should remain vigilant as the deadly Ebola virus still persist in West Africa, while also noting the increase in cases of MERS-COV in the Middle East and the highly virulent strains of Avian Influenza in the Western Pacific.

She welcomed the move to send a Rapid Response Team who flew to Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone to observe, assess, and provide recommendations on the safety and security of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

West Africa sees spike in Ebola cases as decline stalls: WHO

(Reuters) - West Africa recorded 144 new confirmed cases of Ebola in the week to Feb. 8, the second weekly increase in a row highlighting lingering challenges to end the outbreak, the World Health Organization said on Wednesday.

Guinea reported 65 new cases, Sierra Leone reported 76 new confirmed cases and Liberia reported three new cases, the WHO said in its latest update. "Despite improvements in case finding and management, burial practices, and community engagement, the decline in case incidence has stalled," it said.

Ebola healthcare workers discharged

Two British military healthcare workers flown to the UK with suspected Ebola have been discharged from hospital in London.

They were kept under supervision after needle-stick injuries while on the frontline of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa.

They were flown back to London on 31 January and 2 February.

They have not developed symptoms of the virus and have now been discharged from the Royal Free Hospital.

Good news :-)

Ebola crisis: Red Cross says Guinea aid workers face attacks

Aid workers fighting Ebola in Guinea are being subjected to an average of 10 attacks every month, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says.

The latest assault happened on Sunday when two Guinean Red Cross volunteers were beaten by locals while trying to conduct a safe burial, the group said.

Last year eight aid workers were hacked to death in Guinea.

It came as the US said it would pull out troops stationed in Liberia to help contain the virus.

US President Barack Obama announced on Thursday that all but 100 of the soldiers remaining in the country would leave by the end of April.

There were 2,800 US troops in West Africa at the height of the epidemic, but about 1,500 have already left the region.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has told the BBC she is "very optimistic that Ebola can be beaten".

She warned, however, that "there is a danger of the disease coming back", and said Liberia needs "a health system that can work".
