Well, one would hope that the spread of the ebola virus has been halted and is dying like this thread finally is. In the USA, thanks to pressure from the President, there is almost a complete news black out. I guess they are thinking, ignore it and it will go away. I truly hope that the virus has been contained and the number of new cases will drop to zero, but I'm not holding my breath. So in a few months the natives in africa where it all started will go back to eating bats and it will start all over again. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

Nice post Bob, but it's not over yet. United States, yes media blackout. Ebola outbreak: Africa sets up $28.5m crisis fund Top African business leaders have established an emergency fund to help countries hit by the Ebola outbreak. A pledging meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, raised $28.5m to deploy at least 1,000 health workers to Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Experts say that if the disease is to be speedily contained, it needs to be tackled in these three countries. Nearly 5,000 people out of about 14,000 cases have been killed by the virus, most of them in Liberia. Ebola deaths in West Africa Up to 4 November 4,960 Deaths - probable, confirmed and suspected (Includes one death in US and one in Mali) 2,766 Liberia 1,130 Sierra Leone 1,054 Guinea 8 Nigeria http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-29967124 |

Ebola: Patient tested at Royal Victoria Hospital for virus A patient at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast is being tested for Ebola. The Public Health Agency (PHA) confirmed to the BBC that the person has been placed in isolation. It said the person recently travelled in an Ebola affected area and was being assessed and tested in accordance with a national contingency plan. Having already tested positive for malaria, a blood sample will confirm if they also have contracted Ebola. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-29977058 Lot's of cases pending in the United States. |

I've been wondering if Ebola infection will start to increase now the southern hemisphere's summer is coming . Will the warmer weather help the virus mutate or spread easier ? |

I've been wondering if Ebola infection will start to increase now the southern hemisphere's summer is coming . Mutate? Not exactly. Mutation probability depends on number of cases. More cases => greater probability of mutation. Spread? Well, the jury is out on that one, but some research suggests that warm, humid weather slows down the spread. We also demonstrated aerosol transmission of Ebola virus at lower temperature and humidity than that normally present in sub-Saharan Africa. Ebola virus sensitivity to the high temperatures and humidity in the thatched, mud, and wattel huts shared by infected family members in southern Sudan and northern Zaire may have been a factor limiting aerosol transmission of Ebola virus in the African epidemics. Both elevated temperature and relative humidity (RH) have been shown to reduce the aerosol stability of viruses (Songer 1967). Jihadists send ‘vial of Ebola’ to newspaper A plastic vial supposedly containing a sample of the deadly Ebola virus has been sent to a major New Zealand newspaper, reports suggest. Sky News Melbourne bureau chief Ahron Young said the vial was part of a package from a “jihadist group†sent to an office this morning, later confirmed to be the New Zealand Herald. http://nypost.com/2014/11/10/jihadist-group-sends-newspaper-vial-of-ebola-virus/ |

Early Signs of Ebola-Like Diseases Found Tests for Ebola virus currently cannot identify the disease until after people show symptoms, and so individuals exposed to the virus have to wait to see if they are infected. But a new study has found potential early markers of diseases similar to Ebola, suggesting it may be possible to test for these viruses much earlier. http://www.livescience.com/48715-hemorrhagic-fever-ebola-early-markers.html |

I've been wondering if Ebola infection will start to increase now the southern hemisphere's summer is coming . Likely no to both questions. Ebola is very unstable outside humans, so that higher temps will tend to kill it. Second, Ebola has a fairly low mutation rate relative to e.g. Flu etc, so emergence of more virulent forms is less likely. One potential scenario is that Ebola will evolve to be less virulent. Currently, Ebola causes a rapid onset of lethal symptoms which lead to rapid death of the host. The window for spreading of the virus is therefore quite limited. Ebola strains which are less lethal (i.e. make the host less ill/survive longer) will be more likely to be spread. So evolution may favor a less virulent form. |

Ebola virus: Second outbreak in Mali as imam and nurse who treated him die of disease Mali is battling its second Ebola outbreak after an elderly imam and a 25-year-old nurse who treated him died of the disease. Tests did not confirm the cause of their illness until Tuesday, when the World Health Organisation (WHO) had already released a statement saying “confidence was growing†that the deadly virus would not spread in Mali almost three weeks after the death of its first victim. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/ebola-virus-second-outbreak-in-mali-as-imam-and-nurse-who-treated-him-die-of-disease-9856679.html |
