It is people like you two that make it difficult to be green. |

Then I realized I had a much better one already: It's powered by gravity, it's great at hiding the smells, and everything that goes into it gets returned to the earth or turned into mulch. Just about everyone else has one too. Not a good idea for a septic tank system |

I consider myself "environmentally conscious" but not really "green", because "green" has a lot of political bagage for me. I was in the Ecology Club in High School, and have reused, repurposed, or recycled things all my life - my parents were children during the Great Depression. In fact, I need to make a recycle center run so I can put my car in the garage this fall. I have a compost pile in my garden, I use no pesticides or herbicides outside, and only ant spray if they show up inside. I'm still on a septic tank, and the leach field waters part of my front lawn. I water the rest of my lawns with soaker hoses, which put very little water in the air. Moving the hoses around is part of my exercise program, and I adhere strictly to the local watering regulations. My lawnmower is gasoline-powered, but I only need to mow about every two weeks (hybrid bermuda grass plus windbourne), and when this one dies, I'll probably go electric. My rose bushes and flower beds get mulched with shredded office paper and junk mail. I have citrus and nut trees, and grape vines in my rear yard, and a small garden with tomatos, bell peppers, and squash. I have two large fruitless mulberry trees that shade the house and yard in summer, reducing the air conditioning load (set at 80F). I open windows for fresh air and extra cooling when I can. In the winter, the heat is set to 65F. We have a fireplace, but we stopped using it years ago due to my mother's breathing problems. My lights are a mix of incandescent and CFL, but as they fail I'll replace them with LEDs. I use only as many lights as is necessary at night. My primary car is a 1994 Olds Cutlass V6 sedan, but it still passes smog test and gets 25-30 mpg. My 1987 Olds Cierra (2.4L - 4) gets about the same mileage, and I use that for running around town. We have a bus system, but it doesn't run early in the morning or late at night, and doesn't well serve the industrial park where I work. Sometime in the next two years I'm going to replace the Cierra with a 3-wheeled motorcycle. Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |
