Thank you for sharing PJ.

Ditto :) They're beautiful PJ :)

While I'm here... Does anyone know anything about looking after a cat that has developed paralysed back legs? :(

My sister is going to India in a few months and it was always understood that I would be taking in her cat Bagheera. He's lovely :) (I fell in love with him when we had him for about a week as a kitten before my sister could come and collect him. That was two years ago.) Anyway... he disappeared Friday and was finally located at a veterinary surgery last night. He'd been taken there by someone who found him in their garden unable to do more than just drag himself about. He's already incurred £600 veterinary fees (lord knows for what because it sounds like they've done nothing except keep him in a cage since Saturday night) and my brother-in-law is refusing to pay a further £250 for an x-ray to be done to determine what might be wrong. So they've taken him home.

I'm not happy. My brother-in-law forks out thousands each year on his (please forgive my terminology, it is not meant to be offensive, it's just I'm feeling a bit aggrieved) bible-flogging trips abroad and many hundreds on playing golf and his other hobbies etc, and I know they could afford the x-ray but he's adamant that Bagheera is "just a cat". I don't know why I expected more from a very religious man who's been in a wheelchair from the age of nineteen, but I did :( And yet the expectation is still that I will take Bagheera in when they emigrate. And the stupid part is that I know I would, and I'm angry because he knows that and I think is taking advantage of it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

edit: I would be introducing him to a house already teeming with very able-bodied cats and I can't imagine that will be easy for him poor love :(

Beautiful cats, PJ!

Anniet, you need to go here:

http://gofundme.com

You tell your story, use photos, set a financial goal, and good people will help you. No, the kitty shouldn't be with boisterous cats, right now.

Also, get your local news to feature your kitty, newspaper is fine.
(Though you probably reached a wide audience here!)

A successful sample:

http://globalnews.ca/news/1528125/crowdfunding-helps-local-dog-get-needed-surgery/

This works in the UK, too.

CC

Thanks so much CC :) I rang my sister tonight and told her I will pay for an x-ray for him. That is my Christmas shopping done. Kind of a relief really :) But the x-ray will probably just be the start so thank you so much for the links. I think they will prove useful in the days and weeks to come.

Thank for helping this kitty. Please keep us posted Anniet and post links once they are in place.

Oreo, learned to walk again, so there is always hope. There are also mobility aids for critters.

Veera, 17.11.1997 - 20.11.2014

She was my cousins cat, she was there always and liked to scratch my hands and legs. Not anymore.

My cousin and his family have new cat, called Miska-Oliver

As You can see, she is already chasing the mouse :D

Now I have to visit my cousin again, just to see if Miska-Oliver likes to scratch my feet :)

@WezH Awwwwwwwwwww :) Miska-Oliver is so CUTE!!!! :) She will help to heal their broken hearts I know. Thanks for letting us know WezH :)

@Uli - I will do. I'm seeing my sister, and consequently Bagheera, this week :) and hoping to get an update from her either this evening or tomorrow. The latest news is that he seems to be acquiring some feeling and a tiny amount of movement in one of his back legs but the other one is cold - suggesting there is little or no blood circulating through it so it might need to be amputated :(

My brother in law is not happy about the crowd funding notion - the merest suggestion of it seems to have made him prepared to open his wallet :))))))) pride eh? Not sure how far his newfound generosity will extend so I WILL be discussing it further and at length when I see them :)

@Chris :)))

Over time, as the domestication process continues, it would not be unreasonable to expect cats to become more like dogs

...and face the ultimate shame :)))))))))

Thanks for the links CC and Vic :) excellent!! :)

Hi Anniet, any updates on puddy tat?
Everyone should check where you are before making suggestions that only apply to USA.
I know there used to be free charity vets in Britain, but, that was 20 yrs ago and you needed a lot of time to wait for your turn. Even back then people couldn't afford vet bills.
Out little buggers have cost almost $1000.00 between them in the last 3 months
I'm not a complete idiot, but, I'm working on it.
I have an opinion and I'm not afraid to use it

@ CC and Vic :)))))))))))))))

@ PJ :/ Expensive! Hope your rascals are doing okay though! :)

I tend to be DEEPLY suspicious of vets fees ever since I got charged £160 for having: three buckets of water thrown over my dog over a seven hour period. He was taken in for "observation" because of a high temperature. Fees broke down as £30 per bucket of water, and ten pounds an hour for sitting in a cage.

Maybe things have changed since I left Africa - but there - treatment was always about the animal and getting it better. What and how and whether you could pay was sorted out afterwards - and without resorting to lawyers either.

Now to Bagheera :) He's so SWEET! :) I'm going to have to learn what all his different cries mean though. There's his "I want to sit in the chair now" ; "I'm about to fling myself off the chair for my seal dragging itself about the house impression" ; "I need the litter tray and a spot of help with my tail please" ; and "I want a big cuddle... now!" :))))

People can be such fantastic creatures you know! :) A neighbour has made an amazing device on wheels for Baggie's rear end :) Okay... Bagheera is a bit suspicious of it and tries to run away from it as it "follows him around" when he's popped into the harness... but with time and patience he might get used to it.

Some heartening news is that he's been stretching the toes on both his back legs and circulation in them is looking okay now so vet is following a "wait and see" approach and just dishing out pain meds and anti-inflammatories. The blue cross is a good point Chris - I will check it out. PDSA (people's dispensary for sick animals) would be brilliant - but they'd have to be in receipt of rent benefits to get their help and as they own their own home - they don't qualify. Celia Hammond trust is another one that could help... I will look into that side of things. I DID tackle my brother-in-law on the crowd-funding idea from Uli. I'm a good tackler :) he is considering it now - instead of flatly refusing. A little more of my magic and we might get somewhere! :)

Thanks for all your support everyone :) You're a lovely lot you really are! :)

Thank Anniet for the update. The crowdfunding suggestion wasn't from me I believe, but the mobility aids.
Maybe you could take a pic or two.
Good to hear about the circulation issues, there is hope yet, that she might be able to walk unaided in the future.
