Even though I like Hormel Chili's taste, My stomach doesn't like the salt level, so I get acid indigestion.

LOL...that might not be the salt.
It just might be the CHILI.

What's your favorite brand then Mark? I noticed Campbell's, Stagg and Wolf make Chili.

Today most ready made food contains a lot of sugar and salt.
I always do my own chili.

Wolf make(s) Chili

I've had it, and don't care for it. Hormel is the best of the canned I've tried, but in general canned chili is too dense for me. Of course, I could thin it out, but it's not just the texture; I find the flavor rather one-dimensional. I do love my own recipe, though, and my mother's, of course, ;~)

I have tried some of the others, but I prefer the Hormel I mentioned in the dip recipe. Usually the chunky.

But, as some have noted, Mom's was better yet.

Nalley "Not too sweet," said one taster.
That probably means thats too much sugar is added from the beginning in the others.
I wonder why. Sugar and salt is something you can add yourself.

Chili is not okay, it is disgusting. In my opinion, of course. I do not like any aspect of it. Well, okay, ground beef is fine... until the slightest bit of chili powder hits it. I hate all forms of chilis.

My mother used to make chili. She would brown some ground beef, then add Brooks Chili Hot Beans. Maybe some tomato sauce (I forget). And usually corn. Probably some of her own herbs and spices too. I never touched it.

My nephew likes black licorice, yuck! Me I like red licorice.

Well, "red licorice" isn't really licorice.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquorice

What you call "red licorice" is just a fruity candy with
the same texture as licorice, and often the same shape.

A lot of food manufacturers add unnecessary sugar to
their canned foods. They do this to make it tastier
to children, who drive what a lot of parents buy. I
look at ingredients and purposely buy the brands with
less or zero added sugar.

Salt is added to make it tastier to adults.

I only buy canned chili to make chili dogs and a
chili-cheddar dip.

For the dip you cut a smallish
block of cheddar cheese into small pieces and mix
it with a can of chili. Put it into the microwave
and cook until all the cheese is melted and can
easily be stirred in with the chili. Use as a dip
with tortilla chips.

Or perhaps this.
It seems that the Eskimos were the only one who used the salt with a clear conscience, since they used sea water when cooking. A writer once wrote in 1896: "... large doses of salt can cause vomiting, diarrhea, stomach inflammation and even death ..." Then he has the example of a person who has taken ½ kg. salt in 0.5 liters of beer, 24 hours before his death. One reason that salt was still appreciated, despite all warnings and the "evidence", could have been due to the salt was purchased goods, ie imported goods.

Did you have a bad experience with chili peppers, other than in chili itself? I mean, was there another food that had that seasoning you didn't like, or did you eat a raw chili pepper and get turned off by it?

I like to take a bell pepper, slice off the top, and stuff it with things like tuna or cottage cheese.

I had a bad experience as a kid when eating in school.
Carrot stew that was cold and tasting awful.
And I was forced to eat it....
I can't eat carrots since then.

My GF cannot eat pickeled herring because she was also forced to eat that at school.
In her case it was pickeled herring on a piece of bread together with a glass of milk.
Yeck :(

Perhaps not scary.
The combination of pickeled herring and milk is awful and disgusting.

I was forced to eat Liver by My Dad, at least up until 1972, after that no more Liver, Mom divorced Dad in 1972.

I almost accidentally got a breaded chicken liver patty at a cafeteria, once. It looked like chicken-fried steak.
