How will the universe end - with a bang or with a whimper?

Other than satisfying our curiosity does knowing how or whether the universe will end make any difference to us? I guess if you are a believer in the afterlife it may be a little discomforting to know that even the afterlife will have an end. Personally I tend to believe that once you are dead you are gone and there isn't any afterlife. I have a feeling that living forever would get pretty boring after three or four billion years.
