The eat of battle – how the world's armies get fed The menu's might vary but after a few weeks the opinion is always the same, Still, most of the diners weren't moved to renounce conventional cooking. When asked to rate the meal, one wrote, "1 on a scale of 1 to 1,000". The best bit about the meal, he added, was "that I did not have to eat it". |

Great article. I liked seeing what other countrys have for the troops. Its a technological thing about food for the troops. Back when I was in the service, It was just C-rations. And on the 3 occasions I had to eat them the cans were dated from 1968. And when I ate them was in 1976, 1977. and 1982. The first was during a hurricane in Florida, And That cold can of spaghetti tasted awesome in my hungry belly. The second time was in Alaska when we had a 3 day storm and could not get to the chow hall on the last day of said storm. That was a cold scrambled egg thing, Im really not sure, But it was food. The last time was when we had a training excersize in October. Of course it was cold and raining. That time I got to heat my pork slices over a fire. I cant describe how wonderfull it was to have a hot meal. During the first Gulf war a friend of mine gave me an MRE when he got back. That totaly blew away a C-rat. I tip my hat to the soldiers in years gone by who had to eat hardtack.
Old James |

Oh, the C-ration horror stories my Dad (and others) have told me. I only had one of them, back in the late 1960s... Eggs with potatoes, chopped... The horror... the horror... Back then, the food that most of the military I was around complained about was.. uhh... well, I can't tell ya exactly what *they* called it, but I can tell ya the acronym... S.O.S. I can roughly translate it as "*something* on a shingle". The official name of the dish was "creamed chipped beef on toast". I had it a few times in the Base cafeteria just to see what they were all complaining about. I liked it, but then (as my wife is fond of pointing out) I was a weird kid. I haven't had the pleasure of consuming a MRE, but then I have heard they are orders of magnitude better than the old C-Rations. Especially those MREs designed as humanitarian relief rations for those areas with... uhh... special dietary requirements. I have heard that those are *VERY* good. |

S.O.S. My dad loved that stuff. We as a family had to eat it also. He liked it from being in the navy during WW2. I could tolerate it but only because if you one was hungry thats what you ate. The good thing is he didnt eat it all the time. I suspect only when he was nostalgic for his navy days. I wonder if they ever made a calf liver MRE would it be popular:)
Old James |
