Message 1494611 - Posted: 24 Mar 2014, 17:31:24 UTC - in response to Message 1494603.

In the 20th century the Russian population of the Crimea changed from ~0.33% in 1900 to ~0.66% in 2000.

Are you sure in numbers you list? Really? less than 1% ? Don't joke me :)

And as was said already, Russians were there long ago WW-2.

Winter the wiki that you cited, hardly an authoritative source, claims 33% and 66% not .33% and .66% that you claimed.

The best and probebly the most difficult way here would be having the involved leaders in a face to face situation(conversation) to try to find an understanding here.

I think not understanding (hardly to believe if West politics so blind that don't understand), respect of interests of others is required.

Just to recall what NATO did with Yugoslavia... Country was just to successful and independent from world capital to allow it to continue... all that ended with direct bombardment... from defensive alliance NATO... Nice, just nice....

EDIT: So, when EU says "we don't want harm to Russia" we take that with great bit of salt, examples we saw...

lol
Putin is not interested in conversation. Or understanding. He wants Ukraine back in Russia and he is going to get it done

Putin spent the past 10-12 years undermining Ukrainian government. Putting pressure on it.

The fact that the best the Ukrainians were able to build is a corrupt banana republic just made the whole thing that much worse for them and that much easier for Putin.

From press of course. Or someone of you here has some exclusively trustful sources?

If I am not mistaken Yanukovych ended up in Russia. I realize that politics is shady business. However, in this case it is pretty clear whose puppet he was.

I do not know as neither you or I know what is in Putin's mind.
OBTW militia men in Russian uniforms without any markings is just circumstantial evidence, not conclusive but fairly compelling.
A second point is I agree Crimea was Russian for a long time but for some stupid reason it was ceded to the Ukraine and it was theirs just like Russia sold us Alaska and no longer has a valid claim there.

Russian uniform? Do you personally know how Russian uniform looks like? In what details it differs from any other uniform that sells in any hunter&fisher shops?

And regarding Crimea - there was referendum with quite definitive results. They did not want to stay there, they leave by exhibiting own right for that.

EDIT: BTW, the single senseful idea I heard from current ruling forces (not main ones but some from "government" nevertheless) of Ukraine is: "let's improve our economics in such degree that Crimea wanted to get back". Not because I think it would be possible, but at least right positive and productive approach - to make own economics better instead of constant whining and accusations. For now average citizen in Crimea will recive 2-3 times more than before of social payments. Not bad for start.

With that I agree, staying would be very costly I feel.

There are many plans for investitions in Crimea, it needs lots of money indeed, 20 years of degradation can't just disappear... But maybe it's possible to improve it after all.

Well the die is cast and we will see, hopefully without too heavy of a hand. On that I'm a skeptic.

Regarding Yanukovitch I don't think it's really was "Putin's puppet". He was just some big corruptioner that goes where pays more. He almost signed treaty with EU (Putin's puppet hardly would do so), then maybe Russia offered more or his supporters from eastern Ukraine read documents more carefully and understood what really would be such treaty for eastern Ukraine (where most of industry resides)... and direction was changed.

EDIT: and when direction was changed "other side" decided to play dirty... this resulted in blood, not too good for such "games".

EDIT2: And his presence in Russia quite probably just enother deal - personal safety for holding right line in statements (legally he is still president of Ukraine). So, now it would be correct to say "Putin's puppet", but not when he was acting president of own country...

Just another example - he achieved detention of timoshenko, his direct rival... that did not pleased Putin (Timoshenko signed treaty on quite good conditions for Russia and was accused in exceeding her commissions). Again, not typical action for "puppet".
