Is/was it used to shape or trim wood?

Yes, but probably not quite in the sense you mean.

Is is used to draw circles on some material? The holes hold a marking instrument of some sort?

Not draw. At least drawing was not the intent of the tool.

Like a biscuit (baking) cutter it leaves a hole, but the hole is not what was wanted.

It belongs in the wood shop.

Expanding on what Chris said, does it make plugs to put into holes to hide screw heads (or other fasteners)?

Now hold on a minute, you are going round in circles here! Pun intended!

So it IS a trepanning tool that I originally said, that DOES cut discs out from a material, but the purpose is not to make a hole in something, but to produce what is cut out.

Yes?

OK.

I still must be confused by what you meant by a trepanning tool. I was under the distinct impression that the point was the hole...

Typically this is not used quite that way in that the item created is often longer than its diameter.

that is one of the uses for the items created.

Another is wooden dowels to hold items together.

I am going to declare this close enough and the win.

Aw nuts. I missed your post. That it is what it is for, and you got there first.

If you want, I can try to get you declared the winner.

We have had this one before. It is an ice cream scoop for making ice cream sandwiches.

N9JFE posted the link - it should be his.

Really! I think the relative statement to your link was "This ice cream sandwich dipper...", not a scoop, but alas, a rose by any other name...it's yours!

I don't really remember it before myself, but that's probably how I recognized it.

I'll get something up shortly.
