PS3 had support for Linux. So people were using it for "stuff". But then SONY pulled the support. End of story. |

Can't you develop apps for these systems? If so, porting BOINC and SETI shouldn't be an issue, especially for the Xbox One. |

Can't you develop apps for these systems? If so, porting BOINC and SETI shouldn't be an issue, especially for the Xbox One. As mentioned, it's a "closed" system. If you want to write apps for it, you need to enter into a contract with MS. Pay money, sign non-disclosure agreements, give them your first born son, soul, etc. Now this has the advantage that every console has the same configuration, so the games you buy always run. Malware would be hard to introduce into the system etc. This is why they are consoles. They just work, turn them and and play your game. They aren't supposed to be customised like a PC can be. If they open the system up, then it loses the main advantage that consoles have... Ian Edit, the rumoured "Steam Box" is another kettle of fish though. It will be running Linux, which is by definition an Open Source product. |

It's already known how to get to the options for developers on the Xbox One, so maybe they are not so closed as some may think. turn them and and play your game. That worked like that over a decade ago. With the next gen consoles it's more like: turn it on, wait for hundreds of GBs of updates and once they are installed, you might eventually be able to play the game. |

It's already known how to get to the options for developers on the Xbox One, so maybe they are not so closed as some may think. The problem is that even though some information is known. The overall system is still a closed system. If you break the rules of the closed system, what will M$ do? They are not going to celebrate your "achievement". They might say: "Ok mofo, you like breaking our regulations? Well, we will just ban you from our closed system. You can play on your console at home, but any time you try to connect to our servers, we will deny you the connection!" If you have to get internet info and download work units for your "hacked" console by going through M$ servers, you are now effed up. |

But the idea is the same. The console ends up in EXACTLY the same state as every other console. No different versions of OS, different configurations, different driver revisions etc. Unlock the system, and you leave it vulnerable to all the gremlins that plague PC gaming. MS don't want the support headaches that this causes, and most console buyers don't either. If you want to be able to customise and run different OS's, you should just buy a PC (With or without Windows) Ian |

No different versions of OS, different configurations, different driver revisions etc. This can still be true even if applications from "unofficial" sources are allowed. BOINC for example does not change any of these and most other applications also don't do it. |
