That's 24°C difference with here! I don't think my heating would cope... We had -15°C last winter though. Clouded here...

Also a record for the lowest high on this date. The predicted high of -10F would be a record, and I don't know if it's even gotten that high so far.

Wind chills around -40F.

I doubt there's a school anywhere in the greater Chicago area that's open today or tomorrow. (In my case, this will push the last day of school into June.)

What a difference. Wednesday night, I was in an outdoor swimming pool, complaining that the rain was cold. Thursday, I got on the train at >60F. Woke up in the middle of the night with ice on the inside of my window and temps outside <0F. At least there wasn't as much snow here as I expected to find. (Been a lot since then, though.)

The good thing is that my furnace is strong enough that it's not even running constantly. I shudder to think about my next couple of gas bills, though.

Or perhaps not. The official high for the day was -2 at midnight.

Okay, I was wrong about that too. Just saw on the news that Forest Park schools were open. The superintendent says it was so the kids would have someplace to go if their parents couldn't stay home from work. I'm surprised Chicago didn't give the same reason.

I was right the first time. The previous record for the lowest high on this date was -1, set in 1912.

A sweltering 7°C with a bit of rain and wind. Forecast says, more of the same for the rest of the week.

But turning gradually cooler.

Finally a hint that the very stormy & rainy spell is ending and colder weather will arrive. Not as cold as the US though please, we'd never cope!

I saw these pictures on Sky/BBC of entire rock formations that have been smashed away by the recent storms in this part of the world.

Most would've heard of the old saying, "When Hell freezes over".
Well not only does it, but there are 2 Hells.

Hell has frozen over. Now what?

That goes for both Hell, Michigan, in the US and its European namesake, Hell, Norway.

Cheers.

The Thames river level in my area is about to flood the towpaths.

River level is 5.30 metres. The typical river level range for this location is between 3.49 metres and 5.00 metres. The highest river level recorded at this location is 5.71 metres.

Leatherhead and Guildford are already in difficulties. We are also expecting further heavy rain later. We are nowhere near in as much trouble as Eastern Canada and the USA, but it is definitely a big soggy over here, although it is currently 50F.

UK weather

The good news is that today's rain band isn't amounting to very much for most places, but in many areas it really won't take much more.

But in the "non-most" places its pretty spectacular in its rate :-(

Rained during the night here again, but not drastic amounts yesterday or today so far.

I've decided to try my hand at making a budget Stevenson screen for my weather station. Project report here
