Looks like a tool that might be used to do things with the doors on a range

I think that we maybe on the same track then, but certain other cast iron cooking utensils also used a similar gadget. ;-)

Cheers.

Maybe also used for lifting certain types of lids?

Cheers.

Or is a "fits many pans" handle

(Which may also be used as a great back scratcher...)

Being a kitchen implement I'll just stick with my 1st 2 hints I think (I just hope that I'm not showing that much age here).

[edit]Unless you had an unusual set, pots had a different end mostly, but also possible in rare cases, though I also remember similar items being used in other non-kitchen areas as well.[/edit]

Cheers.

Ok it looks like Wiggo is at least
as old as I am, and one word short.
Maybe also used for lifting certain types of lids?

I take it that this fits into something also made of cast iron if I'm not mistaken and found in a very old kitchen?

Chris has the rest of the answer:
on an old coal or wood burner range

So as they say 1+1 = X
With X being the answer.

"Chris and Wiggo you could get together."

Hey don't leave me out just because I sometimes post in Genlish. Not that I wish to win this.

We had something very similar to remove the grate front on a Rayburn room heater/backboiler with the glass slatted fronts. This must be to open doors on a range, or to remove a grate front on an old coal or wood burner range.

It's been many many moons since I seen one of those.

My guess was already said by someone else, so I won't say it. Besides, I'm already running two threads here and one at Beta. That's enough.

Well after careful consideration it looks
like Wiggo has found the mark first:
used for lifting certain types of lids

Then Chris mentioned that part about coal or wood
burning stoves:
on an old coal or wood burner

So I'll call the winner "Wiggo" for naming it
what we called it all those years ago, a lid lifter.
All disputes will be ignored as a PM will
now be issued.
Thank you all for playing.
