I getting the impression that helmets don't actually do anything for Diffuse axonal injury, which I assume this case is. Although I think they do stop skull fractures.

In F1 we have the cases of Michael Schumacher and Jules Bianchi, and the NFL has a serious problem with its sportsmen developing serious brain problems in later life. I also read that boxing might be safer without gloves and head guards, because in most cases they would break fingers and hands before doing serious head injuries.
