after I cloned the old HD there is almost a 10 Gig difference in their size according to what is shown in "My Computer" .
Any one know why it would be this way ?
Old HD shows 422 Gig free
Cloned one shows 431 Gig free .

Look at it in Disk Manager to see if there is any unsed space, hidden partition etc. Also the free space will change depending on the size of the swap file etc.

there is a 100 meg sys part , the swap file should be the same size on a cloned hd shouldn't it ?

Depending on the software you used it might be smart enough to not copy temp directory information. Which can often be a large amount of data.

You could use software to compare the two drives to see the difference, or check each root folder to see if you can find a directory with a large discrepancy.

I used Seagate Disc wizard , the newest version , that came with the drive , a bootable CD.

it is weird , when I leave the old drive connected also , The System still gets a read error , even when it is booting ( supposedly ) from the new HD.
I am going to test the sys a couple more days ,to see how it works with just the new HD in it , I'm starting to have some doubts about the New Motherboard .

I was getting the odd disk read error for about 2 days before I upgraded I started getting them after a update from Microsoft and java on the same day just before you posted your message signing off till you got it sorted.
New system only just finished everything so wont know for a couple of days if it is still doing it .
I have a new Seagate h/d as c: but the old 1 is still there as d: e: (partioned into 2 drives) I have removed 2 smaller ones that are Samsung so only got Seagate in it now i'll let you know if I still get the disk read error ..oh I had no prob's booting up thou if that helps you figure out wot is happening nighty night

I rebooted yesterday and with only the new HD in the sys , I got another read error , ctrl/alt/delete to restart . then it booted ok.
I am really starting to think that maybe it is a bad MB .

I am going to wait and try one more thing before I see about returning the MB.
I am going to get a NEW sata 3 HD and reinstall OS , uefi and ahci on the new HD.
The HD I have is only a sata 2... That may be the problem... IF that doesn't work . Then a LARGE hammer might help. !

I have never had this much trouble with a blasted PC before !
If it is the MB then it will take a couple weeks to get the new one and get it installed. ! Even though it is under warrenty !

The last time I found out that I had a bad RAM stick, the errors that I was getting were almost exclusively drive errors.

If you are getting read/write errors it might be worth trying to reseat RAM and then do a RAM test.

Same here - once bought a new HD too because of errors - turned out to be a bad RAM stick instead. Well at least I ended up with a bigger HD in the process.

I ran ram test from the Win7 pro 64 bit install CD several times and it said that the ram is good .
I will try reseating ram again , got nothing to lose by trying that again... lol

sometimes the pc boots 1st time , it is so intermittent that I can't seem to locate the problem.

You could check the chipset heatsinks on the motherboard. I'm not sure what temp is too high but if you burn your finger (like I did once) it's probably too high and causing problems.

I don't think that is the Problem , It does this from a Cold Boot also .
Even after the Pc has been off with No power to it all night.


I reseated the ram and still have the problem .

The HD's I have is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 , model # ST31500341AS ,
Maybe this HD being just a sata 2 model is not fully compatable with this MB.

The 7200.11 line was supposed to be 'fixed' but, as it turned out, some of them were affected and needed a firmware update too.

Flyod I have been running the upgraded system for a couple of days and no read errors .I put the older Seagate back it too and I did not reformat that drive .It is a new clean install (and ilgit) so i'm wondering if you have been getting the same prob I had just before I did upgrade ??
Sounds like the right idea to try a reinstall before trying the m/b
sorry never answered yesterday it was ANZAC day so was at dawn serveice and then later went to club to play 2up only day you can at the pub 's or clubs

Try Memtest86 instead and let it do at least 6 passes (more would be better though).

The test I ran was from the win 7 pro 64bit cd.
in the boot from cd / repair windows /section somewhere... if I remember correctly.

the MB is new so under warranty , just cost shipping to return , memory costs more , I just ordered MB on 1st this month , I'm still looking at options ,
can't do anything else till after 1st of May anyway.
If I can I might get some more ram ordered in May and try that...

memtest 86 doesn't work so good on 64 bit sys , from what I read...
