... people WANT to see MS fail, in many ways I really hope it does. I certainly don't. Even though I personally consider Microsoft to have been highly destructive to anything and everything innovative in IT. Don't confuse what is often negative trashing journalism that is pathetically out to make sensationalism out of any old dead dog story. Microsoft or any other company are fine provided they do not become too big for their own good and do not gain the power to proffer anti-competitive lock-in and whatever other destructive nastiness. Then finally LINUX can take it's proper place as the worlds premier operating system, well that's what I'm told Linux is already quietly and unobtrusively "taking over the world". Quite scary. We really do need some other good alternatives to balance the equation before we suffer some god-awful neo-meltdown. Anyone game to give such as BSD-*nix or any other freedom a worthwhile boost? We really do need something good to head off Android before we suffer the Skynet effect! (Android is merely Linux in Bionic disguise... :-( ) Freedom requires meaningful choice. Freedom requires meaningful choice. Magic words indeed! So why should those that choose Microsoft be constantly got at & mocked by Linux geeks? As far as I'm concerned, it should be "live & let live" regardless of one's choice! |

Freedom requires meaningful choice. Because Microsoft Marketing appears to be particularly successful at stifling everyone's choice regardless of whether you use Microsoft or not. The Microsoft usurping of UEFI for what I can only see as nefarious lock-in is just one latest example of many examples of sharp business practice and anti-competitive nastiness (in my most humble personal opinion ofcourse). And below is just yet another small example of the wider costs of suffering the ways of Microsoft: German govt DUMPS 170 NEW PCs riddled with Conficker The German education ministry has binned new computers infected by the infamous Conficker worm - and bought replacements - rather than attempting to disinfect the machines. It emerged this week that a grand total of 170 PCs and servers at German teacher training institutes... Simply cleaning up the malware would have cost €130,000 (£110,000)... And we've had over a DECADE of such malware stupidity in the Windows world! Unbelievable. Utter incompetence! Either that or fiendish Marketing... Strange how we don't suffer such widespread silliness for other computer systems?... Meanwhile, there is a cost to everyone for cleaning up the Microsoft pollution, whether you use Microsoft or not. It's almost like cleaning up from a disease... Bring out your dead!? IT is what we make it... Martin (All merely my personal opinion just to be clear! :-( ) See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

Strange how we don't suffer such widespread silliness for other computer systems? Other system account for such a vanishingly small percent of the total machines no one would waste their time on them. |

Strange how we don't suffer such widespread silliness for other computer systems? How very wrong you are. Also, despite the other operating systems that very much make up the majority of systems in use worldwide having been around for a long time, they are not going to suffer the uniquely Windows malware problems. It is all by design. IT is what we make it... Martin (Disclaimer: Personal opinions as always... But please make your own research to back up all claims.) Strange how we don't suffer such widespread silliness for other computer systems? How dumb can you be. Billions of single use boxes that don't connect to anything else don't count. |

Strange how we don't suffer such widespread silliness for other computer systems? How pathetically ironic in the light of: Japan's XP migration solution: Remove network cable As an aside: There are a number of Windows systems that I look after that are considered to be "business critical". We have a strict policy that they are NOT connected to the outside world. Not by any network and not by any USB device even. Output is write-only to CD-R. Utterly stupid and a huge waste of time for everyone concerned. Unfortunately, certain equipment manufacturers only know Windows... (For the Marketing reason of designed-for-ignorant-monkeys?...) IT is very much what we make it... Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

Strange how we don't suffer such widespread silliness for other computer systems? To answer this requires an answer to this, which you failed to reply to..... Message 1330967 ALL those systems were Windows systems? If a nation state wants to do cyber war, Linux won't be a problem for them! |

... Also, despite the other operating systems that very much make up the majority of systems in use worldwide having been around for a long time, they are not going to suffer the uniquely Windows malware problems. It is all by design. Your comments there are for JAVA. That is a cross-platform environment that runs on top of whatever OS. Indeed at the moment, there's some malware problems exploiting JAVA. Hence why in such as Firefox you get a great big in-yer-face warning not to run JAVA from any unexpected websites. (Aside: note that JAVA-script is not JAVA and should be fine for normal use.) So?... At least the greater depth of security possible in true multi-user OSes offers greater ability to stop silly exploits causing too much damage, as opposed to a certain Marketing compromised OS where you must rely largely on "anti-virus" 3rd party bolt-on software to try to contain damage... And then also, on a SELinux system, even a compromised application should be strangled into impotence rather than allowing any mess to spread. All that said, nothing is invulnerable. However, you can give the malware writers an impossibly hard time to do their nefarious business... IT is what we make it... 99% of the world prefers Cornflakes.... ....the other 1% prefers Muesli as they like the fact the fruit is never the same with every box. |

99% of the world prefers Cornflakes.... And 98% of supposed statistics is randomly made up. Getting back on-topic: I do wonder if Microsoft is heading for an exponential crash as soon as people overcome the pain of the Microsoft lock-in or when they just simply get enticed into better ways of working unshackled by proprietary lock-in. There is some very good compelling competition offering freedom of working. Wonder why Microsoft hasn't been able to succeed in mobile devices? And why Apple are suffering a harder time despite near-religious loyalty (indoctrination) by their core customers?... IT is what we make it... 2113 or later Microsoft, Apple, Oracle are but footnotes in I.T history. Linux really has taken a grip in the I.T world. However, with many consumers now being unable to think for themselves due to ease of use on various technologies, they require assistance to resolve various problems. At this time, Linux as an operating system is still open source & free. Now the punchline!!!! As these companies no longer exist, the Linux gurus, rubbing their hands with glee charge what they want for their services. When that happens, pray tell.... What will be the difference between them & the likes of Microsoft, Apple etc? Will the open source community still be saying Linux is free? |

...What will be the difference between them & the likes of Microsoft, Apple etc? That is a worry for any monopoly. There are lots of various Free-Libre Open Source based companies, but noone is as good or as big at what they do as is Google... The hardest part is that Google really are positively very good at what they do! Will the open source community still be saying Linux is free? Hopefully, the GPLvX will still ensure everyone maintains their freedom. That doesn't necessarily mean also free of cost. (Disclaimer alert: All merely my humble observation and opinion...) Meanwhile, we've seen Apple unleash legal Armageddon in their abuse of patents. Microsoft seem to be ramping up their extortion of their threat of their abusing patents. Do we get to suffer the ever greater abuse of patents to kill off all IT as the various dinosaurs trash the world around them as they die. For the BIG players, IT has all gone MAD! IT is what we make it... Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

I don't believe any version of Linux, be it Android or Chrome OS will ever get in to the masses unless a company like Google get strongly behind it and market it as an alternative to Windows.. Then you swap MS for Google, will they be any better only time will tell. I would like to see Google or some other company challenge MS as I would hope with serious competition the customer would be the winner. |

99% of the world prefers Cornflakes.... I believe MS blew off mobile devices as a small niche market. But when they did catch on they are way behind. I think Appels problem now is cost per device. I read where many people are buying last years Iphone because its a lot cheaper. To a smart CEO that should tell you that you have a problem. I forecast Google as the next big gorilla on the block. I would not be suprised if the dont come out with their own OS. IT is what we make it... [/quote] Old James |

There's a couple of old sayings James that's absolutely true... "A fool & his money is soon parted" "Patience is a virtue" Some time ago, I did an exchange - an Iphone 4s instead of cash for work done - sold it for a tidy profit. Updated my current mobile as contract ended. New phone arriving tomorrow is an Iphone 4s - cost £0.00. No upfront charges & no extras on contract. The only cost to me is £4.99 for delivery. |

I bought a pay as you go virgin mobile flip phone about a year ago. I stopped putting minutes on it when in 1 weekend the wife burned through 2 months worth of minutes calling every couple hours just to say hi. I can do without being constantly connected. I got in my car the other day and a woman was doing the same and wouldn't you know it at 7 am she couldn't put that thing down to drive. I just can't think of enough to say to keep me on a phone constantly. In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

... in 1 weekend the wife burned through 2 months worth of minutes calling every couple hours just to say hi. ... Oooer... That sounds very sweet :-) Reliving teenage years?... ;-) ;-) :-) Then again, I doubt anyone would wish to relive those old Buzzby and Maureen Lipman phone adverts!!! And as for damnable telephone poles being planted everywhere and anywhere!... That's another old anachronistic old tech that we need to move on from, if it wasn't for the size and lock-in of the dinosaur imposing them upon us all... But we digress... IT is what we make it... Even better, have it return to the big dinosaur - BT, O2, Royal Mail & Parcelforce back to the GPO & upgrade all their systems to Windows 8 :) |
