Windows 8 is designed to work well with touch-sensitive screens, but the displays add to the cost of a PC.

How many of us in terms of %age ownership, have touch touch sensitive screens, or are likely to buy one in the next year? 5% 10%?

I touch my screen with my mouse. ...

And with flying screwdrivers?!... ;-)


Touchscreens have their place but not for large sized viewing. I don't want to suffer strained eyes from finger smears, nor strained arms from having to stretch my fingers out across a vast expanse of screen.

Beyond a 10" screen, go with some pointing device instead...

It seems that Microsoft has listened to its user base......

Windows Blue (Win 8.1) slated for release late summer 2013 may see the return of the start button & also booting straight to the desktop.....

I think MS listend to the cash register. I wonder how mnay businesses told Ms to stuff Win 8 where the sun dont shine.

I dont see smart phones or tablets taking over from the PC in the work place. I mean would you want to sit at a desk all day and type into a tablet the bosses 24 page report?

Where I work now we are trying out using computer screens showing the schematics of the parts we make. I can see trying to use a little tablet trying to read the dimensions I have to check. They have the screens mounted above eye level. Which when my eyes were 25 years younger I could have read. Give me a paper schematic any day.

Well I don't agree

XP was fine but out of date these days
Vista is acceptable
Win 7 Is fine
Win 8 is the next generation and a great improvement over Win 7.

I am still discovering all the ways Win 8 is better than Win 7.

It has given my 3½ year old laptop a new lease of life.

I can say hand on heart if I had the money I would upgrade all my machines to Win 8 but that would cost around £300 ($464-€357) so I will wait.

Also there is a difference between "touch screen" and "tablet" no one is expecting people who need large screens to work on tablets!! Full size touch screens are made and Win 7 was not "touch screen" friendly Win 8 is.

When I was working I was on site and in the office, so I use a tablet/iPad on site and a PC/Laptop when in the office, despite what people think Win 8 will run perfectly on a desktop, touch screen or not. Cannot both PC and tablet exist and make life easier? I know it did for me!

They should honestly consider a PC mode/touch screen-tablet mode switch.
Perhaps this is along the lines of what the Windows Blue post was about.

I haven't heard any thing other than the touch screen as being different .

AT home different story I sit across the room I can't touch the screen .

For Lappy's yes win 8 most of the new ones come with touch screens

On the last point, I have no quibbles. I have 7 on my daily driver and have had no stability issues whatsoever.

But being a hardware person, I drives me nuts when it does things like going off on it's own and trying to load drivers automatically when I swapped GPUs this weekend. Had to manually go into task manager and kill the auto install processes one by one until I could regain control of the rig and install the nVidia driver I wanted to run.
Just seems rather clumbsy when you have been used to XP for years.

My laptop screen after boot, if you look top left under the word "Start" you might just make out the double tile with the picture is labeled "Desktop"



Click on the "Desktop" tile and !!



Surprise surprise you are on a non touch screen desktop.

Simples!!

Still should be able to boot that way if one desires.

I'm not really worried about it for now.
My crunching rigs will be on XP for years yet, I predict.

My daily driver is on 7, and I can deal with that for now.
What the state of Winders shall be when I have to next update anything is anybody's guess.

I am not say there is anything wrong with XP, Vista or Win 7, but then a lot of the negative things I have read about Win 8 do not seem to be based on someone who uses it every day like I do. Yes it is different, yes it takes a bit of getting used to, perhaps MS should have carried on with Win 7, but they exist to make money. People are always resistant to change, anything that looks different people are naturally wary of. Me I love it!

I brought a Nissan Juke when it first came out simple because it did look different! I had an iPad within the first month, simply because it was new and different.

Windows 8 works like magic, and yes, you have learning curve with w8, but hey, you did not born being able to use computer, you had to learn it.
and i can tell you that w8 took only like an hour to learn (reading helps a lot )
