It is, in fact, three consecutive invitations to the Rose Bowl in a row for those mighty University of Wisconson @ Madison Badgers (Eric's undergraduate alma mater), with a resulting three consecutive painful defeats. And Gary, you are correct. Given that Eric did his Ph.D. at Berkeley and there is a huge Berkeley/Stanford rivalry, losing to Stanford was exceptionally awful for poor Eric.
