It won't be the backlash from this incident for the simple fact, there was another during the summer this year.

What will make the nincompoops wake up will be the backlash should another incident like this or any other that involves ATC causing an aircraft disaster.

The last 30 years have shown throughout the world that multiple deaths are the only thing that cause change in the Air Transport industry.

12 hours to fix

As you rightly say, 3 systems in place so a good idea would be to get the 3 parties involved here - The government, Airports and Airlines. They make enough profit as it is - that's 1 system each!.

Makes one wonder why our government wants to sell their 49% stake in NATS, also wonder why the Germans were hell bent on purchasing it - Full control over Europe maybe, something they failed to do in 39-45.

Your post would have earned a nice +1 but you should have checked your facts first, therefore only a paltry +½.

Night flights until October 2014 in the UK at least will never be more than daytime flights......Night Flight Regime

The link is only a consultation paper but the restrictions are in place.

Unlikely to happen? You sure about that? If you check you will find that it is often the forgetting of simple rules that causes most accidents...Aviation accidents and incidents involving ATC....

..and before you state that those were in the past, remember, you like flying so one aviation disaster will always remain "one too many".

Agree but if that did happen, there will have to be systems A,B & C in place, otherwise the crap will certainly hit the fan if the system goes down in that scenario.

Can you imagine the chaos if that happened during the day?

Actually I enjoy a short haul flight to Gibraltar as much as an Atlantic one to the States. What I never understand is people flying from London to Manchester and back for a business meeting in a day when it's so much easier to take the train for just over 2 hours each way, or with HS2 just over 1 hour. Or take the overnight Caledonian sleeper to Edinburgh or Glasgow, why faff around at airports?

Probably because the train is incredibly expensive. Unless you book way in advance a single train ticket from Manchester to London can cost you up to around a 100 quid. I have the feeling that with EasyJet or something it doesn't cost nearly as much.

London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly, tomorrow 11am - £34 Virgin

London Heathrow to Manchester, tomorrow 11am BA1390 - £66 BA

I haven't looked at return fares, and advance fares may be even cheaper than next day prices. Of course you have to factor in the time and cost of travel from the cities to the airports, rather than going direct from city centre to city centre. Trains will also have wifi for laptops to do business on the trip.

Eh, strange, when I was in Manchester (a year ago) I looked up how much it would cost me to buy a train ticket to London if I bought it at the station. I wouldn't have made it with 34 pounds. Then again, maybe the prices differ if you buy them directly on the station or if you book them at Virgin.

EDIT: yep, it depends where you look and book. If you go to National Rail Enquiries and try to book a ticket it cost like 76 pounds.

The problem with these cheap fares is that they are no good to the business person. I've been in the situation of being invited to a meeting in London, at 10:00 or earlier, in the next couple of days. If you take the cheap fares that are usually only available between the rush hours, then you have to travel the day before and return the day after. So you have to add two overnight stays, that cancels out any savings. Plus in situations like that you cannot book in advance.

I used to regularly do the Presto/London round trip, at peak hours...
Now the fare varied dramatically, but the most spectacular was getting a first class return for the following day, in peak hours, for well under half the normal off peak single fare - I just happened to turn up at Preston station just as a pre-booked ticket was being refunded somewhere else in the country. All down to timing and luck.

For those who often complain that Microsoft is a large monopoly should read this....

EU quashes Cisco complaint

...“Lync faces competition from other large players on the enterprise communications market, such as Cisco, which alone holds a larger share of the market than Microsoft. That circumstance considerably reduces Microsoft’s ability to impede competition on that market.”

....as our favourite Linux guru has often stated.....

competition is good for all :)

LG's Chromebase PC

Will it make a dent on Windows?

"However, they run a more limited range of applications.

Popular products including Skype, Powerpoint, Photoshop and iTunes are all unavailable.

However, Google promotes a range of free and paid web-based alternatives that can be run through Chrome OS's browser."

Only a few years behind the times...

From c2007 we had from The Evil Mad Scientist: Solid freeform fabrication: DIY

That was just a bit of fun for himself and his family.

Since then, the new improved version is: The CandyFab Project!

As it's technology related....

A short time ago I received a text message. All it stated was "941410" which was automatically underlined so it's a Number to call.

The telephone number it came from was +1 310 421 2412.

Googling it, found that it is from the Los Angeles area. Can find no other reference to the number itself.

Anyone know if it's a real number or a spammer?

Edit: Never mind, found it on 800notes.com. They can come here to change boiler filter if they wish........ :)

The beginnings of Skynet?

Somebody already thinks so.......

"In the longer term, watch out when any of the nodes can evolve or otherwise improve their own software. The consequences of sharing that capability with the central 'mind' should be explored before it happens."

Some interesting links regarding the misuse of technology, which only makes it much easier for many to access illegally (or for the pedantic - Unauthorised access).....

List of councils whose staff gained illegal access to DWP
More than 1,100 DWP employees disciplined over snooping - undercover NSA by chance? :)
Nosey council staff breached Customer Information System
HM Court Service staff breached CIS

Some links are fairly old, five years or more, but as the more up to date ones show, it is still occurring.
