The trick is Oz, is to either ignore that which you know is an attempt to get your goat or Answer in a pleasant manner.

I normally let my threads wander, but when I feel that they've wandered enough, bring it back on track. So far, I trust I've been successful enough at doing so.

No one, in this day & age, can avoid computers & technology & its here to stay. So lets all debate the pro's & con's without having to get either personal or enter an O/S war.

Sirius, I believe I've only answered in a pleasant manner throughout this thread, and attempted to explain my views as best I could without insulting anyone, even if they disagree with me.

Oz, I was just relating to what has already been posted. In no way is it a dig at you.

Unfortunately, for me at least, I have yet to enter ANY forum/chat room/website where C & T is being discussed without seeing the 3 Monkeys defamed at least once.

The 3 monkeys being Apple/Microsoft/Linux (shame the last one didn't begin with D - Then AMD could be ruling the roost...:) ) & unfortunately for any fanboy of those monkeys, I use all three & find that ALL 3 have their +'s & -'s & use what I want when I want.

The same should be said of all IT Techs/Enthusiasts.

Back on track....

3 weeks to go for M$'s "new" O/S general release. Anyone think it'll outstrip XP/Vista/Win 7?

Not until SP1 which will put right all the things they didn't have time to get right before the marketing guys "FORCED" the tech guys to go to shrink wrap. No wonder Bill walked and took retirement.

Yeah, with the features in the DP & CP, which are locked out in the RTM, unlocked would be nice.

Saying that, my installation of Win 8 is in the best place for it....

VMWare & that's where its going to stay!

4G

The latest version 0f 3G is equal to that of 4G, so can't understand the rush to buy the latest "gadget". After all, a phone is a phone.

25 year old yuppies trying to pull their date, and who can well afford it? You play to the market.

Yep, & where would we be without them... :)

Got a system delivered this afternoon from a regular. It's close to toast! corrupted bios is the least of its problems.

Told the guy the cost who went "ouch" & asked if I'd take a "trade". With what he offered, the answer was a clear & definite YES!

Just reflashed the bios, connectted rig to server & reinstalled from image of his system. Job done. Now just doing the normal win updates.

Trade in? iPhone 4s in excellent condition as he's bought his son an iPhone5.

Cost to me? About 110min & about £0.40p in electricity.

I love techoyuppies :)

Then why do you persist in taking it farther afield?

Why do you keep inviting it by asking questions?

I think I like today's XKCD:

Particularly the joke comes through in the mouse-over text:

Facebook, Apple, and Google all got away with their monopolistic power grabs because they don't have any 'S's in their names for critics to snarkily replace with '$'s.

Well... Quite a (similar) line-up and quite a desperate contest. The 'joker' in the game is the retail price and whether there is any 'loss-leader' element in the commercialisation 'gaming'.

From my own view and casual glance, the Microsoft offering is a total gamble for the retro looks yet all 'new' user interface. That will either 'wow' people with the retro Microsoft look, or foster a 'comfortable still-locked-in' feeling for those too scared to change away from the Microsoft world (does it come with viruses?!). Are the rich old customers more valuable than the new impoverished youngsters and upstarts?... Which are the more numerous and gullible? For myself, I can't help but view the Windows 8 look as too old and dull and plain boring. Have we really not made any progress since the days of Windows 3.11 WFW?!

Then also, what electronic strings come attached with the others that keep the users on the respective corporate leash?

Is this article correct in that they're relying on technology too much?

It's often been on the news here in the UK for the past several years of truckers using sat-nav & taking 44 tonners down country lanes where it would be very awkward for a 26 ton rigid.

Also, there have been numerous occasions where truckers have taken their vehicles under bridges that just cannot accomodate any sized vehicle above 3 & a half tons!

Modern Maps

That's always been the beauty of using Ordance Survey mapbooks - all those obstacles are clearly shown & where bridges are concerned, even give the height of the bridge.

Will this lead to stagnation or better innovation?

As it will go to appeals court, Apple should not get to excited about the fisrt round win.
Yes a jury said they had won, But isnt an appeals court just a panel of judges?
they might have a different take on it.

Yep, you called it right :)

Im sure it will go one court higher also. I think Apple should just let it go. If I had been a jurer, It would have been a hung jury.

I wonder how the big shareholders like spending BIG BUCKS on a stupid lawsuite?
In the end its going to be the price point that sells smart phones not some stupid apple on it that is way to much overpriced.

Totally agree, & I'm pretty sure Apple know that as well. So it looks like they're just out to stifle the competition.

A worrying trend?

40 years ago, an American publisher (Ace Books) introduced us to a long running sci-fi series which was soon taken up over here by Sphere Books. The books all revolved around an astronaut named Perry Rhodan & found it an entertaining if slightly far-fetched at that time (due to technology, I don't think it is that far-fetched now).

The main gist of the series was that Perry found an alien spacecraft on the moon & on entering it, found many aliens connected to machines. The problem was that those were not life maintaining machines but "virtual reality" apps(?)

He then succeeded in accessing the mainframes himself which led to him creating a "dynasty" which served mankind......

......could we be seeing the start of such "virtual reality" & thereby lethargic, muscle wasting devices hit Earth soon?

That is the one Chris, thank you for the link. Got cut off from that, when my friend accidently killed himself via electricution.
His brother was also a good friend of mine, but neither one of us purchased any more after that.
Yes I know very off topic, but hey that is how things sometimes go.
