End of the month update. I've been actually gone for most of it, but there hasn't been too many noticeable problems or major issues, right?

Well, this weekend we had yet another signal table run out of extents. I went through the usual grind this morning to create new database spaces and got things rolling again by noon (local time). You may have noticed a dearth of work overnight, but we're back to full production now.

The newer servers (georgem and paddym) continue to get configured, assembled, and put into action. It's still unclear, but becoming ever more likely, that paddym will become the new science database server, and oscar will then become the compute server paddym was originally intended for.

By the way, one drive failed on carolyn over the weekend and the hardware RAID gracefully handled it without user intervention. Yay! A RAID configuration that actually did what it's supposed to!

Otherwise, things have been fairly light in server-land. I'm mostly working on data cleaning, analysis code, and other non-server development lately hence not much to report.

I should mention the GPU User's Group still continues to spoil us - here's a pic of my desktop at the moment, complete with new 24" monitor and ergonomic keyboard:

Could be one of those portable jukebox players I've heard so much about :)

Yup. Old school. I even took out the bells to make it quieter (when it rings you hear the buzz of the arm flapping inside, hitting nothing). It still works fine. And I can cradle it on my shoulder while typing, unlike my cell phone. And it sounds better than my cell phone. And it gets reception at the lab, unlike my cell phone.

A picture I took during one of many hikes over the years in the Escalante National Monument in southern Utah. That's Steven's Arch, I think the 4th largest natural arch in the country (over 200 feet across), which I am scrambling up towards from the river below, and will ultimately reach and stand inside.

Here's a small version of that pic:

And here is pretty close to the actual spot in google maps.

That reminds me of Arches National Park--another great place to check out if you haven't yet.

I'm surprised a big institution like Berkeley hasn't gone to VoIP phones yet. (Not displeased, just surprised.)

How is it that nobody recognizes an "ameche" when they see one?

Why? Is there any advantage when you consider the environment? Besides, you have to consider the cost of changing out all the telephones and the new system that would be required in a big institution.

Matt,

The one thing I want to know is how can you work in the midst of all that neatness?

The phones are expensive, but they already have the network in place and VoIP costs nothing for internal calls (whereas I believe that even if you call the guy at the next desk by just his last 4 (5, whatever) digits on a conventional phone, Ma Bell's child of the week still gets a penny or three.

OTOH, you need really big UPSes on the power supplies for the VoIP phones or they don't work if the power goes out. I suppose that might be a major consideration in earthquake country.

Hey Matt,

Be sure to let us know right away if you change out the download server. Some of us have specified either (xx.xx.xx).13 or .18, whichever works better for us, and we'll need to change it or delete the entry if you put downloads on a different ip address.
