Hi, After rpm install I have the following message : [root@bernard bernard]# kboincspy Plugin Predictor@home Monitor for project predictor.scripps.edu loaded successfully Plugin AstroPulse Monitor for project setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu_ap loaded successfully Plugin SETI@home Monitor for project setiathome.berkeley.edu loaded successfully Plugin SETI@home Monitor for project setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu loaded successfully Plugin ClimatePrediction.net Monitor for project climateprediction.net loaded successfully KAction::property( "accel" ) failed: property invalid or does not exist Could you tell what is needed here ? Best regards, Bernard |

The Plugin ... messages are normal, they are diagnostics I put there. I haven't seen the KAction::property("accel") message before, I'm not sure if it's just a warning or something more serious. A couple of questions: 1) what distribution of Linux are you using? 2) do you see an icon with a letter B and a magnifying glass in your system tray? If you do, click on it. - Roberto |

There was no shorcut for kboincspy in the barr. My distro is Mandrake Linux 10.1 Today I saw that there was an rpm for mdk on sourceforge. I downloaded it and rpm tell there is an unsolved library dependancy. ------------ rpm -ih kboincspy-0.8.0-1.mdk101ce+kde33.i586.rpm attention: kboincspy-0.8.0-1.mdk101ce+kde33.i586.rpm: signature V3 DSA: NOKEY, key ID 1406f2dc erreur: Dépendances requises: devel(libidn) est nécessaire pour kboincspy-0.8.0-1mdk ------------- I will try to find in which package is the missing library. Hello Roberto Thank you for this great piece of software. Brings back memories of Roloefs Seti Spy that I used years ago. Works well on my FC3 and FC2 machines. Chris Bosshard Visit my homepage astroinfo SETI page |

Bernard, Instead of > rpm -ih kboincspy-0.8.0-1.mdk101ce+kde33.i586.rpm use > urpmi kboincspy-0.8.0-1.mdk101ce+kde33.i586.rpm It will automatically find and install all required packages. ---- IMPORTANT: READ BELOW ---- Before you do anything else, there's an issue that you should be aware of, if you're not aware of it already. As the title of this thread says, KBoincSpy requires KDE 3.3. On the other hand, Mandrake 10.1 comes with KDE 3.2. For KBoincSpy to work on your system, you must have upgraded to KDE 3.3 first. There are a number of ways to get KDE 3.3. If you're a MandrakeClub member, there should be KDE 3.3.0 packages in one of the Mandrake 10.1 CDs. Otherwise, there are several people who have packaged KDE 3.3. I know Thac offers KDE 3.3.1 packages for Mandrake 10.1: http://rpm.nyvalls.se/kde10.1.html There are probably others. ---- IMPORTANT: READ ABOVE --- Roberto |

ok. I found libbidn11-devel rpm package and succeeded in installing kboincspy. I make it run on an X terminal and then came a box. But when I openned the submenu configure - boincsettings the application crashed with the following : bernard]# kboincspy: symbol lookup error: kboincspy: undefined symbol: _ZN13KConfigDialog7addPageEP7QWidgetP15KConfigSkeletonRK7QStringS6_S6_ I tried to start it again but the application displayed again the same messages : Plugin Predictor@home Monitor for project predictor.scripps.edu loaded successfully Plugin AstroPulse Monitor for project setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu_ap loaded successfully Plugin SETI@home Monitor for project setiathome.berkeley.edu loaded successfully Plugin SETI@home Monitor for project setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu loaded successfully Plugin ClimatePrediction.net Monitor for project climateprediction.net loaded successfully KAction::property( "accel" ) failed: property invalid or does not exist More interesting : if I try again kboincspy it will open the box in kde. If I quit immediatly, then new error message like above. So the application will run every second start. Initialisation problem ? Bernard |

> will there be a package for Gentoo Linux? I suppose it's a corollary of Murphy's law that if you have packages for 6 distros (I built packages for Fedora Core 3, Suse 9.2, Mandrake 10.1, Slackware 10.0, and FreeBSD 5.3; Frank Thomas built packages for Debian sid), somebody will ask a package for precisely that one distro you neglected to build a package for... :D Please, if you can, compile it yourself. I don't have the Gentoo isos, just to download 2004.3 it would take me a couple of days. > also, can i use it on Fluxbox (don't have KDE) I don't see why not. The only possible problem that I foresee is that by default KBoincSpy starts minimized in the KDE system tray. Reading from the Fluxbox documentation, it looks like if you compile Fluxbox with KDE support (./configure --enable-kde), it should be able to display KDE tray icons. - Roberto |

Roberto, Kboincspy is great!!! been waiting a long time. One comment, I am able to run it under kde 3.2.2, I tried upgrading to kde 3.3, had some conflict probs using apt-get, maybe I had some stable and devel resources mixed in, used synaptic to try and force, no luck, but Kboincspy is running ok. Just a thought could I have some libs from kde 3.3 mixed in with 3.2 allowing kboincspy to work? Running FC2 Thanks, Joe |

Joe, I use KDE 3.3 in only one small part of KBoincSpy (in the code, it's just one line). Unfortunately, it's a crucial part. KDE 3.3 allows plugins to add their own entries to the Preferences dialog dynamically, when they're loaded into memory. Since the SETI@home, AstroPulse, etc. monitoring are all implemented as plugins, I really needed this feature. I've never tried running KBoincSpy in KDE 3.2; given that KDE 3.3 is used only in this small part, it's possible that it runs almost normally. How is your Preferences dialog looking? Do you see entries for AstroPulse and SETI@home? About upgrading to KDE 3.3 in Fedora Core 2: I used the RPMs from ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/3.3.1/RedHat/Fedora2/ They're from RedHat, so they fit well with the other packages in FC2. I downloaded them all (well, only the i386 and the noarch, not the SRPMS) and did a "rpm -Uvh *.rpm": it upgraded everything without any problems. For KBoincSpy, you need only the 3.3 kdelibs package. If you manage to upgrade only that, keeping the rest of the 3.2 packages, that should be OK. Try not to force, if possible. - Roberto |

After installing KDE 3.3 from Mandrake cooker I can run Kboincpsy from an X terminal but the application opens a box only every second time I start it. This is strange for ps show that kboincspy is working in background. Bernard, it appears now it's working fine. The only problem is that either you don't have a system icon tray, or your icon tray it's not working properly. By default, when KBoincSpy starts, it's minimized as an icon in the tray- that's why you don't see it. If you can't use or prefer not to use the system icon tray, do as follows: go into "Settings"->"Configure KBoincSpy...", and uncheck "Enable system tray icon", and click "OK". Close the KBoincSpy window (which now will quit the application), and restart. From now on, KBoincSpy will show up as a window whenever you start it; moreover, it'll quit whenever you close that window. - Roberto |

Roberto, The only problem is that Settings - configure Kboincpsy is the only menu that does not work. Actually it makes kboincspy terminate anormaly with a signal 6 SIABRT. Bernard, I really wish you hadn't used the KDE 3.3 in cooker. It has been built with all debug options on (proper packaging require to turn most of the debug options off), and it will kill a KDE program if it exhibits the smallest imperfection (whereas a regular KDE 3.3 will allow the program to continue, at most printing a warning). It turns out there's an imperfection in the preferences dialog, one so small that all the other KDE 3.3 I've used didn't even issue a warning. I've corrected this imperfection, and uploaded new packages for Mandrake. They are at the KBoincSpy website. With the new binary package, the preferences dialog should work now. - Roberto |

Roberto, I tried to install kde 3.3, no luck with apt or the rpms, to many dependency probs. I will wait for Ferdora Core 3, I am an American living in China shouldn't be much longer before it's packaged here. I can run Kboincspy, but only have the entry for S@H, nothing for Astropulse. I feel kind of embarrassed but cannot find a preferences tab.....when I try the configure option in the toolbar....I crash with a seg fault I think......I can try again to configure and send you the error output..... Other than that it is running great with kde 3.2 Regards, Joe |

Roberto, Yes I should have not installed the KDE Cooker version. However it help you correct a minor bug. Thanks for the modification. It works. I was able to unselected the tray option. If I find some more problems I will report the error messages via the sourceforge pages for I don't want to bother other people here.
