it seems they don't care about the results, last year they shutdown the servers to run nitpicker. now they got a dedicated machine but you never see it enabled which makes me think they don't really care about the science. perhaps they should hand the project over the the computer science department, i sure they can scrounge up time to keep it running and perhaps fix the hole ball of wax. with a 10Mb connection to the world, you would think the slowest of hardware could easily handle the task, which makes me think they made it all to complicated and it needs to be redesigned. The server that was suppose to run nitpicker had to be used to replace Bruno and another in the splitter and AP assimilator/validate departments. ;) Cheers. |

Let's not forget that Synergy got co-opted for many day to day server tasks when other older hardware started failing. Hence, why nitpicker is not on it's active task list. I seem to always have problems getting work. I never build a good stash. I'm running the unified installer v.39. I did not install any of the other things for astro. Am I missing out? |

Problems getting work is to do with the servers or the client, not with the applications running - nothing to do with Lunatics. First question - are you not getting work or are you not requesting work? Check the messages tab/event log. |

Ran out of work a few days ago and not getting any new, CPU or GPU. That's on six machines. |

I just got an Astropulse unit on my Solaris Virtual machine, which is still crunching a vlar SETI task. I thought I had lost it due to a small difference between the app_info.xml file by Dotsch covering both SETI6.03 and Astropulse and the SETI executable. I corrected the app_info.xml and the vlar unit was resent to me. Sorry for the delay, I am crunching it 24/7. I am curious to see the time the Astropulse unit will take, its deadline precedes that of the SETI app. Tullio |

Ok, I'll see if I can remember this correctly (you must remember that some of this was going on over a year ago now so someone may jump in here to correct me) Bruno and Vader (I also think that the now Bruno was actually another old server swapped in to take over its work without having to change names in the system setup) use to do a lot more work but the load on both was getting to much which was making them unreliable so a lot of processes were removed from them and given to Synergy so it had to give up doing nitpicker duties (Snergy also took over Maul's duties). Gowron was also another problem but eventually Thumper took over its duties when Oscar took over Thumper's. Ptolemy was also another problem but it was taken out of action and parts from it were used to give Thumper a much needed upgrade. Jocelyn's problems were its connection to its attached RAID though that was sorted fairly quickly. I hopes this helps you out with a bit of the juggling that went on back then when the 3 new servers eventually came online. Cheers |

Ok after a lot of reading of old Technical News posts going back 1.5 years here's how it all finally went; Oscar replaced Thumper as the SETI@home science database and Thumper replaced Ptolemy was the internal file server. Carolyn replaced Mork as the BOINC master database. Marvin replaced Bambi as the Astropulse science database. Bruno was replaced by Bambi (the later being renamed Bruno to make it easier on the whole system to insert). Synergy was to be the nit picker server (it may will be again) but it had to take many duties from both Bruno and Vader as those two couldn't handle the demand of all the tasks they were allotted. I hope that this clears things up. :) Cheers. |
