OK, I'm looking for a plausible explanation here. This showed up on Yahoo News earlier this evening. As a CME was passing Mercury it apparently lit up an object in the vicinity. UFO advocates are claiming it is a cloaked space ship. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6X96xI1gLdQ Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. It's a function from how the software creates the image. Explained about half way down the article. Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. Albert Einstein |

I read the explanation but it made about as much sense to me as the UFO hunter's and I'm not one to promote conspiracy theories. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

Even some the digital cameras (that are on the market) have that function for long exposures noise cancelation. It is usually called dark-frame substraction or long time noise reduction. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark-frame_subtraction |

they basically do image averaging, which eliminates objects that are being viewed. So you don't see Mercury but you do see its ghost being hit by the CME. Once again it's interesting to see someone use their imagination instead of actually using science In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

Sort of like trying to argue with someone with strong religious beliefs. Point out the facts and move on is about all you can do. :| Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. Yep, that video is proof aliens are cloaking themselves and hiding behind Mercury. OK, will i contact the White House or will someone else do it? John. |

Johnney, I would suggest that we need rather more scientific proof than that to take it any further. It is pretty hot in Mercury's area, I would doubt ET would sensibly be there if they didn't need to. But it is up to you of course. Ahhhhh Chris, Don't be a spoil-sport, tell the White house about the video! They deserve to know! Anyway, they could be hot little aliens that like the warm climate near Mercury. You get a really great Sun Tan there, really quick too!! Full body Tan in 3.1 seconds! John. |

Who should really be trusted in these threads? Apparently not me. Perhaps there are someone working at the White House who may take some time at running the Seti@home client on his or her computer? Should I believe more of what Chris might have to say here, or should I rather believe in Johnney Guinness? Please explain this to me. |

I think Knut should volunteer to contact the White House with this information In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

there is occasionally a thing called humour injected into these threads. it sometimes doesn't translate into american english. |

Do you think I have any sense of humour? Please tell me about someone who does not have the same sense of humour. Got a serious question for you. Possible communication in space means wireless communication. Here on Earth, we have (dedicated, possible internal) lines for mobile phones, radio communication for separate services and amateur radio by means of specific frequencies. We do have a system in place for this to work orderly. Therefore the frequency band around 1.42 GHz should not be used by us. When it comes to communication, we may have transmission of pure data, not communication or the similar which necessarily could be thought of as being intelligent in nature. But some time ago, I came across a voice / speech recognition system on the web which I chose to buy. Similarly, if I start up a program which is built into Windows which is called Sound Manager (sndrec32.exe) which is meant for the recording and playback of sound files (.wav files) - if I plug the microphone in and speak a couple of words, I am able to see in a small window the graphical representation of this assumedly .wav file. In addition to .wav files, you also have other formats (including .mid / .rmi and .mp3 as well as Microsoft's .wma and Real's .rmi, etc. formats for the same playback. In each case the relevant software for the playback of such files will be needed in order to use it. For the sound card I am using, there is no specific application coming with it. Earlier on, Creative had a wave editor for one of its sound cards, Creative AWE64, which had an IDE/ISA connector and therefore can not be used on my PCI-based system. There are however separate wave editor software programs available for free on the web and I do have at least one such downloaded but not installed. From reading, I get the understanding that a gaussian in Seti@home is not related to the representation of sound waves. But a person speaking with another by means of a radio telephone or "walkie-talkie" (even the buses have such ones) have a particular or specific voice which is making this person recognizable by the other part. So the question would then be. Could an alien voice perhaps be detected or heard by means of the Seti@home client, or do we only detect some data transmissions by such E.T.'s if we ever were so lucky? |

Music, I am sure there are some posters in this forum who hear alien voices. |

Hi, friend. You have been around here four more years than me. Do you think Albert Einstein ever had the opportunity at having a meeting with the Pope? Or perhaps receiving a letter from the same place telling him that he was no longer "welcome"? Poor Giordano Bruno lost his life because of his beliefs. Apparently we have learnt a lesson since that dramatic day. Remember that astronaut who dropped the hammer and the feather on the Moon making a reference to Galileo Galilei (what is his first name)? I think this comment may have sprung a laugh or two at the Mission Control. One of the reasons I think there is hard for people that intelligent life may exist other places in the Universe is the implicit thought of thinking (or assumption) that "no one beats us". Therefore it is hard to believe in possible "alien numbers" when we already have the means of communication on our own. What is the difference? Are there any similarities? |

Perhaps I rather should "stick" to the subject and read what the original poster (OP) had to say? Apparently my thoughts are running wildly around. If I am not wrong, also Skildude is of the opinion that I am hearing voices in my head. In fact I do not. Some people are known to have had "Near Death Experiences". They were able to return to this life and tell about their personal experiences. Perhaps a sign of life after death? But that is all about religion and beliefs, which is currently not my speciality (or specialty in the U.S.). Perhaps I really should not tell about this, but anyway, when I moved to this part of the city where I am currently living, some 35 years ago, my parents built their home next to a cemetary / graveyard. For orders sake, since this place is only 4 miles from the city center, this place definitely was not the "ugly" place, rather the complete opposite, especially in daylight. My bedroom at that time was located on the rear, upper part of the house. When the sun was up I could look at that graveyard through my bedroom window. Because the graveyard was built from an earlier cornfield that was located in the same are and originally had a total size much larger than the other elements that were in the same area, there was a ditch between the rear end of the house area and the graveyard which carried excessive water. In some autumns in the late 80's, we had big amounts of rain precipitation pouring down. One night I apparently had one of those awake dreams. Apparently someone or somthing invisible came into my room and perhaps my head as well making an unwarranted and quite unpleasant intrusion. Comparing this with some unpleasant dreams I have sometimes had, this episode was in my opinion quite a bit different. My best guess is that this visitor chose to leave me with a reminder of its presence. It appears it found me not be the subject of its choice. Therefore it just left me in the end. But if I am not completely wrong this could have happenened several times. If you are dreaming, what you remember from such dreams soon vanishes from your memory and recall. Now you really think that I am mad! |

It's just my opinion of course, but I think this "news" got way too much attention. The source of that glow is definitely known to be an artifact of the method used to eliminate noise, but people are still posting this around claiming a cloaked ship exists. |

Amazing, everyone screams photoshop when they see real unaltered picture, yet when they see a photoshopped picture they scream it is real. Follow the money. |

If something is explained then their conspiracy crumbles. Therefore, they reject it and label it a coverup. I, however, am a believer of Occam's Razor. |

Just to be sure you all understand my opinion here I trust the explanation given by NASA, I just don't quite understand it, not being a photoshop expert. What got me was that news agencies actually gave the wild explanation air time. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. What got me was that news agencies actually gave the wild explanation air time. Not really PhotoShop (of which I do have some experience) but it is a software artifact. Perhaps this example will help you understand. Our brains do something vaguely similar. Look for a few seconds at a relatively bright light (even the computer screen in a darkened room will work) then close your eyes and look away. You'll probably see a little bit of a glow on the backs of your eyelids. That is your brain filling in the blank spot with light that it had gotten used to seeing. The Mercury shadow-ship is the software version of the same effect. Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. Albert Einstein |
