Hey all, I just set up the ATI Open CL app and it seems to be running slower than on my CPU. CCC and GPU-z are showing 0% usage mostly with spikes to 33% or so. CPU usage is very low so it's not running on the cpu. Any suggestions on how to speed it up? i5-750 @ 3.3Ghz for the CPU, 11.11 drivers for the GPU. I know it won't run as fast as on NV cards, but I figure it should run a heck of a lot faster than what it is. |

yes. uninstall the drivers you are running and go back to the 11.2 version. thats the last high GPU usage driver from ATI. make sure you use driver sweeper to get all the other ati drivers that the unistaller misses In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

You're absolutely right....it should be completing tasks much faster than that. As skildude said, make sure you use Driver Sweeper to remove the current drivers, as the ATI Uninstall utility misses rather a lot of things which can result in all sorts of problems when you install the earlier drivers. I'm running an ATI 4890, using the 'slower' 11.5 drivers (it was a good balance for me in a 'daily drive') and thats doing Astropulse WUs, typically in 11,000 secs, 'normal' MB in around 2800 secs and 'shorties' in about 800 secs. With that 5870 and the 11.2 drivers, you should be seeing much better times than those. You might also want to consider using the Lunatics enhanced CPU app. Don't take life too seriously, as you'll never come out of it alive! |

I guess it's a good thing I don't play any new games. lol Though I hate going backwards on driver versions. I'll give it a go. Thanks for the help. Though some WU's do seem to use the card, the one I'm currently running is using the GPU at 96%. Strange. I'd throw the CPU versions in as well, but I run WCG on the CPU. ;) |

Using the -hp switch helped when running ATI AP r521 on my i7 2600K, otherwise the HD5770 didn't get fed properly, Claggy |

Using the -hp switch helped when running ATI AP r521 on my i7 2600K, otherwise the HD5770 didn't get fed properly, I'll give that a try, but what about the MB? Since I always seem to get MB tasks and not AP ones. ::EDIT:: I set -hp and it did seem to help a little, but a driver change is still required. Since the AMD site is down for maintenance I'll have to wait a bit for that. Now one important question I have is. If I install 11.2 and then run 11.11 and only have it update the graphics drivers and not the ATI APP / OpenCL drivers, that should give me the higher performance with the SETI app while giving me the latest graphics drivers? I'll give it a try once I can download, but figured I'd see if anyone else has done it in the meantime. |

If I install 11.2 and then run 11.11 and only have it update the graphics drivers and not the ATI APP / OpenCL drivers, that should give me the higher performance with the SETI app while giving me the latest graphics drivers? Internal function calls and API's may change randomly between versions, so I have my doubts that would work out well. |

Well I added the -hp bit to the app_info, uninstalled the drivers and did a driver sweep. Installed the 11.3's and am having the exact same thing going on. Any more suggestions? ::EDIT:: And I scrolled back up and saw 11.2 not 11.3... Guess I'm going to re-install again! lol >.< And with the 11.2 installed, it's going much faster. Though it keeps downloading vlar WU's. Which is about the worst case WU iirc. But it looks like it'll process it in about 30min. |

Well I added the -hp bit to the app_info, uninstalled the drivers and did a driver sweep. Installed the 11.3's and am having the exact same thing going on. The ATI cards don't have the choke and die issue that NVIDIA cards would have. I only had an issue on my E8400 if both cores and the GPU were all doing VLAR tasks. Then things started to get wonky. Then again I see that on CPU only machines when all cores are doing VLAR tasks. I noticed that windows was still usable instead of stuttering like crazy when a NV card had a VLAR. And since I only run SETI on GPU's I guess I'll be fine unless it interacts poorly with some WCG project. Thanks for the help all. Now my only problem is that the dust bunnies need to be evicted from the 5870's heatsink! |

Now you can change appinfo to run 2 units a time. Look at my results. your card should be a little faster. Change <cmdline>-period_iterations_num 15 -instances_per_device 2</cmdline> <count>0.5</count> Mike With each crime and every kindness we birth our future. |

Now the Iterations line I'm going to guess is how many "packets" of information processed before the gpu is released for other things like updating the screen? From the r177 release posting: Command line parameter that application supports -period_iterations_num <N> splits single longest PulseFind kernes call on N calls -period_iterations_num 1 (default value) If you see lags in GUI or even driver restarts - add this parameter with value >1 (integer numbers). -instances_per_device <N> allows to run N app instances per single device -instances_per_device 1 (default value) -hp will instruct application to rise its priority class to high. Useful when host under high non-BOINC loads. Also useful if BOINc client itself imposes high load on CPU. Claggy |
