If my computer crashes and I lose several tasks in mid-stride, does that affect or limit my ability to get future projects?

Also, if I perform an upgrade and abort tasks to return them before doing an upgrade, does that affect or limit my ability to get future tasks?

Yes, to some extent. However, it is recoverable.

Every task that is reported late, aborted, or errored out will reduce the daily quote / CPU by one. Every task that is reported correct and on time will increase the daily quota.

NOTE that you do not need to abort any tasks during an upgrade of BOINC. It will handle completing the tasks across upgrades (multiple upgrades in the case of CPDN).

I have a simular issue.

I fired up an old rig I used for SETI@home classic, but I've found its no good with Boinc. Takes something like 6 hours to complete 1 WU.

So is there a way to tell Boinc to not download any more WUs?

Also I'd like to just shut off this computer, will the 6 WUs its already downloaded just go back into the Q?

6 hours per workunit is better than half my machines (that I've powered off because I can't afford the electricity).

To tell BOINC not to download any additional workunits, go to the Projects tab (assuming you're using the Advanced View), select the project you wish to not receive any more workunits from the press the No New Tasks button on the left.

If you just power down the machine, those 6 workunits will eventually return to the queue after their deadlines expire. Otherwise you can manually abort the tasks to return them to the queue sooner.

Great, thanks for the information. Told 2 of my machines to quit downloading new tasks for now. I have parts on the way to replace everything in my AMD machine, just keeping the case and PSU. Then it will be re-born as a "new" SETI cruncher!

Sorry, I didn't specify what kind of upgrade... I meant an OS upgrade which might include a file system format and re-partitioning.

I converted two systems from WinXP to Linux Mint a while back and aborted tasks on one system to "flush" them before switching OS's. Unfortunately on another system, a dual-boot configuration went ary and I flat out lost several tasks for projects that were underway.

Your answer clears this up. Thanks.

OK, a completely different OS install has somewhat different rules. You **will** lose any tasks in progress when you do this. Make sure any completed tasks are reported before the side grade.

You don't need to.
After just 10 days (8 Dec 2011) this "poor" task will reach the deadline and will be sent to somebody else:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=5620840

(It happens all the time with 1000s of tasks - nothing to worry about)

You have 2 new tasks - forget about the old one.
The system is well prepared to deal with cases like this.

But if you insist - you may try to Merge the 2 computers (6263315 and 5620840)
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/hosts_user.php?sort=rpc_time&rev=0&show_all=1&userid=8093697

Use the link "Merge" at the bottom of "Details" page:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=6263315

Then use [Update] in BOINC Manager

Had a similar problem in the evening of 12/9 - some tasks began downloading, but after 20 minutes still said they were downloading. Message section said there was an attempt to restart download of lost tasks, but no progress. I reset SETI, then clicked "UPDATE" but no new downloads. However, there they are on my task list on the website, they just aren't on my computer. Here are the Task/WU IDS:

Task 2201479230 WU 878754563
Task 2201479229 WU 878754557
Task 2201479227 WU 878754551

These are in my task list (online) but did not download to my computer.

It looks like you have created your own Ghost WU's. They should eventually clear
