I keep trying to get my system running on all 4 cpu's in it. It keeps dropping down to 1 core after a week or so. Anyone have any idea why this occurs. All the setups i see say 100% on cpu use.

Do you actually have four, or more, tasks present on the machine that could use all cores between them?

If so, what's the status of the other tasks - 'Ready to start', 'Waiting to run', or something different?

You very probably see not SETI but
MilkyWay@Home N-Body Simulation v0.62 (mt)
task running:
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/results.php?hostid=273415

and mt == Multi-Threaded == uses all cores for 1 task

Check in Windows Task Manager that all cores are at full load.

I have sufficient tasks waiting to run. somewhere around 25 or so, a full page and more. task manager says 1 cpu running and it swaps about every 2 min between cpu's.

Yes in the past I have seen milky way take over all 4 cpu's in 1 task but at the present it is not doing any milky way units though there are some in the q to run. there are about 10 milky way and 30 seti jobs in the q and i setu task running on 1 cpu

I have sufficient tasks waiting to run. somewhere around 25 or so, a full page and more. task manager says 1 cpu running and it swaps about every 2 min between cpu's.

If the tasks are in the "Waiting to Run" state then BOINC isn't running them because it thinks it needs to do something else instead, is running something else, or is being wonky. If it does this on a regular basis once a week and then runs correctly after restarting BOINC I would expect it is being wonky.

Ah. Looking at the list of 'your computers', I only see one quad core - and it's running Linux.

Round here, most people - including me - run Windows, and have that as a default assumption hard-wired into their brains when answering questions from users: it can be helpful to draw attention to other operating systems when you post.

Having said that, I'd been wondering whether you could be suffering from some sort of memory (RAM) starvation - 'waiting for memory' can be one of the reasons for suspending a running task, and I can't think of any others offhand which would suspend a task when the was a free core available and not ruled out by your preferences. But I'll have to leave it to a Linux specialist to describe how to check memory usage on your machine.

I've had Wu's from Primaboinca and Yoyo that use up to 2Gb of ram on my quad core Linux box which has 4Gb of ram . Typically what happens is the OS will use the HDD when it lacks Ram. The noise is quite noticeable. The OS also takes a hit and slows down.

Perhaps his CPU useage setting was set to 25%

In my case I've seen similar issues as the OP and in fact they were due to my settings being too low for memory usage by BOINC, but it never told me that it was waiting for memory. Boinc just used as much cores as the memory allowed to run and all other tasks were just "waiting to run" with no details about why it was not using the other cores (using BOINC 6.12.34 Windows)

Which distro / version of Linux are you using.
some of them like ubuntu go into power saving mode even when Boinc is running because seti and most other boinc projects are a low priority process the operating system does not keep the system running at full power.
This power saving mode can be changed, and the method depends on which os you are running.

Since you have this line:
Wed 26 Oct 2011 12:20:58 AM PDT Reading preferences override file

... it means you are already using local preferences.

You can find the local preferences in BOINC Manager menu:
Advanced -> Preferences
(or use Alt+D, P)

If you want to edit the file directly look for:
global_prefs_override.xml
which is in the Data directory: /var/lib/boinc-client

I don't see any strange messages except that only 1 task is started.
I'm not sure was BOINC 6.10.17 a beta of final version.
Try to install BOINC 6.10.58
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

That does show only one task running at a time. I would think 2GB would be plenty, but depending on what the box is doing I guess it might not be. How does the free memory on the machine look?

Free memory is about 77% I reloaded the seti client and for the present I have 4 cpu's running. now to see why this vista machine is only getting about 100 a day. my XP machine gets at least 500 a day.

That's credits, of course - for a moment I thought you meant WUs.

Probably because your Vista machine is returning a lot of errors, with "too many exit(0)s" in the samples I checked. They never even got started, with 0.00 runtime.

That can sometimes happen because an over-assertive virus scanner or firewall is waiting for you to authorise the application as safe to run on your machine - but there can be many other possible casuses as well. You need to have a look at the machine as a whole.

your last valid task was reported 26 Oct 2011 | 23:09:04 UTC together with a failed bunch, everything after that seems to have errored out.
Anything you changed on that machine around that time? or rather a bit earlier but after 26 Oct 2011 | 14:26:07 UTC before which you seemd to be validating nicely

The logging flags that have to do with how BOINC decides what to do might be helpful in troubleshooting. There is a full listing of them here. With the right ones enabled you would be ableto go back through the history and see when things started going wonky. I would think <cpu_sched>, <cpu_sched_debug>, <sched_op_debug>, and/or <state_debug>.
