The attack on the World Trade Center in New York was an attack on the whole world, although Americans bore the brunt. I've watched some of the (excellent) CNN coverage and join the prayers which have been offered.

I have a particular reason to feel involved with the victims: my name (except for middle initials) appears twice on the memorial: Michael Roberts (Ladder Company 35, Engine Company 214).

On that day 20 years ago, I had the day off from work. I had plans to go and pick up some paperwork from another county regarding a child custody case.
I awoke to the news on the television, with disturbingly controlled voices such as the anchors use when something really bad is going on. I watched as the second plane hit the tower, proceeded to get dressed and on the road for 100 mile journey(each way) to the courthouse. When I arrived, I was searched outside of it, allowed to enter, then told they were closed.

They were not without compassion though, they handed me the papework, saying they could not accept payment that day. But I never can forgive my ex, that I could not wrap my arms around my children that day.

The closest connections that I know about that I have to the towers are two survivors.

The brother of one of the firemen that was pulled out of the rubble alive was working for my father at the time. My sister's mother in law was staying in the hotel.
