Message 1141907 - Posted: 18 Aug 2011, 1:50:04 UTC

I now have over 450 WU's in cache , I'm not sure if it will speed up the WU's any , BUT , Figured it might not hurt to try 2 wu's on GPU at a time...

Step by step directions for this Dumb ol Country boy , Please !

That will work, but 2 at a time will work just fine. I have my GTX460 doing one AP and MB at a time currently. But it will go up to 2 MB once I get through the collection that I got last week.

No reboot required, just the first 5 items of your list.

It won't let me paste over that XML File...
even after I re-named it app_info_old
I must not have the right program to do that... ???
Can you send it to me as a XML file ?
I think I got it , opened it with notepad.

OK It worked... running 2 on gpu now... Hopefully, NO Errors will happen !

THANKS ! You were a LOT of help !

It really wasn't necessary to copy/paste. All you needed to do was change the <count>1<count> to a 2

Wrong, all that needed to be done was change the count from a 1 to a 0.5
(Changing the count to 2 implies 2 GPU's are need to do a Wu)

Maybe I'm seeing the results wronge , but , it seems to be taking longer to do each WU at two at a time... by about a third more time total ???
before at 1 GPU WU at a time It seemd to take about 15 min per WU...
Which should equal about 30 min for 2... It seems to take about 40 min for 2 now...

or am I imagining it ???

No you are not imagining it. Running 2 at a time requires more time to complete. It is up to you to decide.......

Is the total throughput of the work higher when running 2 at a time versus 1 at a time? Which setup completes more work units in say 24 hours? Something you must decide and then implement the best setup for your system.

I think ( Maybe ) I was Looking at this wronge...

It was taking about 15 min to do 1 Wu ( Cuda ) Now I am doing 2 in about 20 min total , at 20 min each , doing 2 at a time should equal out to avg of 10 min for 1... so it would be about 1/3 faster crunching ?

LOL... OR am I totally crazy , and totally LOST.... LOL

LOL, you're not crazy. That's exactly the improvement I've documented before when going from 1 at a time to 2 on my GTX 460. Just relax and enjoy the higher RAC.

Such a "trick" doesn't work on a '250 does it?

Must get a 460 and see what happens....

I think you figured it out there Floyds, it takes a little longer to do each work unit but with doing two at a time it is still quicker than just the one at a time. It will take some time for the difference to really show up due to the difference in the work unit times themselves but it will show up. The 20 minutes per pair sounds a lot more like it than your first post about 40 minutes.

As Geek@Play said, it depends on your system. Some will take longer to do two at a time but most see a good speed up. With you running a GTS 460 you should have no problem at all and I might suggest, if everything works out ok, then you might want to try three at a time by changing those .5 counts to .33. Just remember you have to find six of them for a 64 bit system. ( If you have any problem, just ask your Company Gunny, he'll explain it to you! :-) )

Rob, the trick will sort of work on a 250 but you will find it to be much slower and more problematic than is worth the effort. It is mostly for Fermi cards.

my bad I should look before I leap and yes I meant to put 0.5 and yes you do not need to copy and paste if you already have an app_info

At My age ( 57 ) I would think My old Company Gunny would be in the Daisy field
(But hopefully NOT ) by this time... Since it was over 30 yrs ago... :))

Well, I was a SSgt when I got out in 77 and I'm still kicking sooooo.

Glad to Hear That... :)))))

Usually The Company Gunnies were the Older More experenced Gunnys, usually about a E-8 or so... which means he was a good bit older than Me...
If I remember right , The one I remember would have been in his 40's then...
He seemed OLD to me then anyway... LOL

[quote]I think you figured it out there Floyds, it takes a little longer to do each work unit but with doing two at a time it is still quicker than just the one at a time.

About how long running 2 at a time , before I know it will be ok to try 3 at a time ?
Havn't seen any errors as yet , Not sure if the ones I have done at 2 at a time have been validated as yet... Got about 330 pending... LOL
