I was at Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station in the early 90s, and we frequently had USAF AMC C-141s and C-5s stopping on the way to and from overseas to refuel or embark troops and gear in our heavy fuel pits...

Near the end of my time there the Air Force was transitioning from the C-141 to the C-17, same capacity and better short/unimproved field performance... They were testing on our auxilliary field south of the base that was 3000 feet of steel mesh matting...
