Just made it active for you. I do not fight fascists because I think I can win. I fight them because they are fascists. Chris Hedges A riot is the language of the unheard. -Martin Luther King, Jr. |

Speaking of making active links... Author of the article didn't link to S@H either... ;) grrr |

Speaking of making active links... Author of the article didn't link to S@H either... ;) grrr Probably because this doesn't effect Seti@Home at all, our data comes from Arecibo. See question one here, it will help them in other experiments they are participating in but not this particular one. Traveling through space at ~67,000mph! |

Speaking of making active links... Author of the article didn't link to S@H either... ;) grrr Actually it looks like we will be seeing work from it. The Green Bank Telescope can scan 300 times the range of frequencies that Arecibo could, meaning that it can collect the same amount of data in one day that Arecibo could in one year. |

Speaking of making active links... Author of the article didn't link to S@H either... ;) grrr The question one here is about Allen Telescope Array and this thread is about "News on Green Bank" Telescope ;) From the article linked before: "With ATA's dishes in hibernation for now, astronomers hope the powerful Green Bank Telescope ... will provide targeted information about potential life-supporting planets. ...... The project will likely take about a year to complete, and will be helped by a team of one million at-home astronomers, known as SETI@home users, who will help process the data on personal computers." Mention of SETI@home but no link to SETI@home site. Of course if a reader of the article decides to do a Google search for SETI@home Google gives correct first result: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/ And here: UC Berkeley SETI survey focuses on Kepler’s top Earth-like planets http://newscenter.berkeley.edu/2011/05/13/uc-berkeley-seti-survey-focuses-on-kepler’s-top-earth-like-planets/ you'll see: "The search began on Saturday, May 8, when the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope – the largest steerable radio telescope in the world – dedicated an hour to eight stars with possible planets. Once UC Berkeley astronomers acquire 24 hours of data on a total of 86 Earth-like planets, they’ll initiate a coarse analysis and then, in about two months, ask an estimated 1 million SETI@home users to conduct a more detailed analysis on their home computers." So July we should start seeing units. |

-Scratch that- I see the front page has a listing for us using Green Bank. Good news! Traveling through space at ~67,000mph! |

If we're going to get a year's worth of data out of this, that means everyone will get a crack at it. When I first heard that SETI@home would be getting a limited amount of observing time, I figured we'd crunch through it really quickly, but there's much more being recorded at Green Bank than at Arecibo, so even the people turning in just a few WUs here and there will get a chance to find something in this targeted data. And of course those of us with GPUs will have even greater odds of stumbling upon ET than we do now (maybe that's not saying much though!). Very nice news. |

So July we should start seeing units. I doubt that it'll be that quick, v7 hasn't gone live yet, and there aren't even any Stock v7 cuda apps yet, this what Eric posted recently: The Green Bank data is sure to happen... Then aaronhaviland asked: run some tests to find what, if any, changes to the S@H application are needed. Eric's reply was: Most likely it would be either a "7.5" or we would add it as a separate app if it to difficult to have a unified application. I expect it'll be quite a few Months before v7 is released here, i expect the first app released will be a plain v7 app, with a v7.5 app later (if needed). Claggy |
