I've been saying for years that if there ever is a third world war, it will probably start in the Middle East.

Middle East

I also said that, over 30 years ago, when I was in the RAF, when many were looking towards East Germany, as it was then. I sincerely hope I'm not proved correct. Then again, I think that there could be 'civil unrest' in this country and on that score, I hope I am right! Perhaps a common factor is, that people are becoming more dissatisfied with their 'rulers' (who quickly forget that they need the mass of the people behind them, for them to 'survive').

Don't take life too seriously, as you'll never come out of it alive!

i can't help but wonder if the financial crisis of 2008
may not be the direct cause of the social unrest today.

The United States is contributing to the problem because of two action it has taken. The first was Bushe's and Obama's bailouts. To cover the cost, we are inflating our dollar causing food prices to rise. We are seeing this in our country but in countries where the income is only a few dollars a day it is much more punishing. The other thing we are doing is turning our corn into fuel instead of making it available for export. Corn is used in many food products and used to feed animals used for meat. This also causes the above increase in food prices.

When you combine out of control inflation with an already shaky government the results can't be good.

You hit the nail on the head!
Food for fuel.
Remember the phrase "Guns for butter."
The reason I thought that Russia and China may go at it is because by about 2020
China will be facing a food crisis in around that time due to population pressure.
Famine has touched off its share of bloody wars in the past. I am just afraid that Russia and China may be the two countries most in need, and too close together.
I dearly hope I am very wrong.

.. pls don´t take this too serious and/or for endless discussion .. it´s just my personal concern, feeling & opinion, again using my whole day to investigate - after some years of watching things before.
it looks like all this .. unfortunately has to happen - to finally find out, that all of us shall not survive, if we go on like that. in fact .. still most of the world - doesn´t seem to recognize that. 4 me, libya now is another symptomatic occurrence of the general situation. up to now - and as far as i can see, uno, usa & nato are moving & operating very "learning" and helpful in their moves. but - cnn just mentioned, that russia already vetoed against any intervention .. and china again starts to supress any opinions - kicking around journalists like many years before. must be very "weak" governments, that are such afraid of "their" people? no way out to be afraid, if you are supressing others - i think!
all the crisis are "artificial"; simply money & results still doesn´t reach the people, who are really working for it; all the slaves we are - still working (just to (sur)vive in many cases) for a minority of speculants and criminals - just interested to keep the oil flow to their cars, buying the next house or yacht .. completely regardless of the death & suffering resulting from that.
to be honest, i feel deeply ashamed sometimes to be part of this "race", which is still much better able to destroy, divide and kill, than to use all the technology and development to gather people, construct and evolve .. having the focus on things, that unite us on this planet.
i don´t believe to much any more, that we are going to really learn from all this, before something happens, that is such a big threat, that we collectively wake up .. the world-wide games still played now are .. well .. looks like i don´t have a word for it.
aloha from austria.

.. this is not the united states only! unfortunately this a global desaster. just as an example, here now - i have to pay € 50,- for a small bag purchasing some food - nothing special, which is ~ 3 times the cost of only 10 years ago. my salary - on the other hand - is ~ 25% down compared to then. fuel prices, energy, cost for flat, taxes - everything is exploding (over night) .. that means, i have to work more for same money to get less goods; and the tendency continues .. not just for me, but for the majority.
may be "foolish", that i didn´t take the other way - which i could have done .. to be on the "pirates" side - selling others interests for my own ego; 4 me, it still feels "right" ;-)

.. and edgar cayce on timescale AND prediction; leaving a lot more others unmentioned to predict, that we wouldn´t survive, if we go on like that - together - world-wide!

psae: may be not too much use for efforts (including grid-computing) to search for extraterrestrial intelligence, as long as "we" behave as stupid, as we are still doing!

.. very "nice" .. and - just as an example - well known; empty words; best way to put the focus on moral values "some"where, to be able to go ahead inside own country without further notice, neglecting most of all said here.
.. if america would REALLY use it´s enourmous power and ressources .. and remember their original values & believes - and act like this inside & out, we might have a better world.
what really looks different in a very positive way .. arabian countries shouldn´t try to provocate the "west" to involve - just to be able to say later, they didn´t really mean to have this or the other collateral damage, which would occur in any case. so .. how the us and europe is behaving right now - not immediately interfering - seems to be the only right way for me.
the question left open unfortunately - is the true intentions behind everything on all sides; this nobody really knows at all!

the people on the street seem to want mostly the same thing. Self governance, freedom, basic human rights. The difficult part is most people have trouble when actually extending the same to others.

If the US and Europe intervene, we can make the other side seem like the good guys. Sad but true. Help us, but do not join us is very difficult.

very true .. and - very complex, indeed! in fact middle east (and finally northern africa in the first run) is exploding step by step now .. the whole world is sitting on a nuclear bomb, which is glowing around now for years.
.. and - openly speaking - i´m very much afraid about all kind of losses on all sides. no one really knows, who is who on either sides, and as soon as anyone is raising weapons, he is - in fact - doing the same, what he wants to avoid. this is one of the big paradoxes of "peace", i think.

psae: pls. be a little patient with me, these kind of things are even hard to understand and even more to explain in my mother tongue in a written form.

What happened in Egypt gives hope. There are always risks the good intentions of the masses can be hijacked, but the price of democracy is they must be willing to deal with that also.

In Libya, quite another story. I was personally hoping Egypt could lend assistance. This does not (yet) seem to be in the cards.

no .. unfortunately not "in the cards"; completely different situation, like tunesia and not comparable. but may be also this is a kind of CHANCE .. if the arabic countries would finally ASK for support (which they are afraid of for clear reasons) and russia and china would agree, this could again change a lot; in a way, it would also force "other countries" (also them) to agree to something, which they are not actually living now!
still .. even being a perspective .. this would be another earthquake on the globe, never running in any way smoothly; but let´s stay optimistic ;-)!

psae: many thanx 4 sharing your opinions and thoughts with me!

.. and this .. is (one of) the "other" side(s) of the medal. propaganda, propaganda, propaganda .. and everybody accuses others, about what they are doing themselves - but just hidden in a quite different way.
and today - finally france has another "nice" idea to go alone, that sarkozy´s ego could be playing something "special" (who is the crazy here?) .. so even now, they are NOT ABLE to do - at least - something rasonable .. to-gether. forget, that what is happening is not "pro-west" (supression), but "contra-supression" of their own (mostly west-supported) "leaders", which is everything else than the same!
.. will be interesting, when "west" peoples will stop to accept and watch this without further action, being exactly the same principle .. still and again - over and over again - everything very, very disgusting, as i did mention already;
i´m sorry!
