I could not voice my opinion in the previous thread. http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=62289 Get rid of all the paid people that do not have the time to be. Replace them all with Interns that would love to do the job for free.. Hey that rhymes. Paid people complain, Interns do not. |

This might escape some peoples attention... but there is science behind the project. That does mean it is kinda nice to have some actual scientists working on it. From what I have seen the wide majority of them do care about this project, and go well above and beyond the call of duty. Janice |

Even interns pay no attention to forum frothers. They only pay attention to the people they work for |

It might be nice to have some interns but that does not negate the real problem No one is available on weekends We can only bitch -- They do AS THEY PLEASE NO matter how much we plied they do as THEY WANT We're lucky they tell us anything That's the way it is We can't change that Even though We provided the servers THEY tell us what they want It's not the best .. but that is what it is If you consider this a negative post, so be it |

Why does S@H HAVE to be up on weekends? This is not a commercial service, and nobody suffers or dies when it goes down. given the rag-tag mix of hardware, and the fact that the software is constantly being rewritten and adjusted, down times will happen. So what? BOINC keeps most of us crunching through brief down times. For longer down times there are other projects. (All with their own problems.) Yes, recent donations paid for two new servers. There are 9 others, of mixed heritage and age. UC Berkeley pays some wages, donations pay some more, but not enough to provide 24/7 staffing. We get what we pay for. |

Why does S@H HAVE to be up on weekends? This is not a commercial service, and nobody suffers or dies when it goes down. You are totally correct Does that stop asking for better Two new servers for now ... another on the way Kinda says "WE're" sick of the "old hardware" excuse If it takes another new server, Well I think "we" can get that too Why does it have to be up on weekends ? Well Its down for 3 days during the week Weekends are all we got Now there is the drive to make things right from outside the norm All that is needed is some WORD from the seti gods I'm just saying "WE Give" and they are doing "business as usual" |

The new hardware hasn't even been in place a full week yet. The client has a cache for a reason. This "throw the bums out" attitude isn't constructive. |

Wouldn't it be better if we wait to find out what the problem is before we start guessing how much better it could be fixed? The crew at SETI is part time. A small part of that part time is used to try and keep the computers running. I do not know what kind of "interns" they could get for the project, but most that might be capable of some system admin would not be close to doing a lot of the science required for this project. Frequency attenuations to monitor, what fluctuations to monitor for, formulas for RFI rejection, Let alone coding to accomplish/improve all of this. They have 2 new computers to try to optimize, spent most of several weeks getting them operational, more to try to re-configure to better handle traffic, all of which was working at amazing levels before something happened. I have no idea what, and neither do you. The fact we can speculate and discuss, upload units, and seem to keep getting credited for them means a lot of the project IS still up. So when they get in, they will see what is wrong, try to get it straightened out, and try to figure out the initial cause. And then if they have time they will probably let us know. Until then, relax. We all have a level of frustration. It really does not help taking it out on each other. Janice |

Why does S@H HAVE to be up on weekends? This is not a commercial service, and nobody suffers or dies when it goes down. This is true. You can ask all you want, but nobody owes you an answer.
I interpret that as there was more than two sick old servers. Servers don't last forever. If another is needed, another is needed.
Who told you it was going to run perfect from the git go? Is there some better way than going "live" to find out where the bugs are on a new system? And where are your assurances that the servers would be covered 24/7?
Do you really worship the Seti people?
Yes. Why should it be any different? A donation is a gift with no strings attached. The receiver of the gift owes the giver nothing, not even the courtesy of a Thank You. Now if you and/or anybody else think there are strings attached then what you think is a gift is called a "grant". And you should have consulted your lawyers for assistance in drawing it up so both sides would have a legal contract to agree on. |

"They / you said gift We didn't " Is that the royal we? Nobody said you couldn't post. But I/we get to post too, whether it agrees with you or not. If it wasn't a gift you should ask for your money back. It appears you are not getting what you contracted for. |

Looking at my cache, I think I could have made it until after the scheduled 3 day outage. |

Looking at my cache, I think I could have made it until after the scheduled 3 day outage. I'm gonna run out some time tonight. Took a while to get my DCF straightened out so I was a bit low on WU cache. I will probably be here first thing in my morning, (East coast US time) cheering them on. Since I thought they were going to take another week to break in the new servers I'm more than happy to wait another couple of hours. PROUD MEMBER OF Team Starfire World BOINC |

seti classic used to be down for weeks at a time then run a week or two then go off again for another couple of weeks... the reason some of us aren't so up in arms about this is: It's the way it has been since the beginning! This isn't a life or death situation. People will not die because Seti is down. |
