It took me until now to obtain everything to make the Cobras Fang. While pre mixing all but the ice.. the odor alone was enough to give a buzz.. From the Herbsaint I think.. glad it did not call for much But.. I picked up enough other ingredients for other concoctions. I will share as research continues. Janice |

*sits with a strange smile as she tried to focus on the screen* Yeah... somethin like that. next time... bit less herbsaint.. bit less bitters.. bit more grenadine... Did not taste the rum. Was a bit bitter. Added a touch of simple syrup (sugar and water) and a bit more ice.. Spent about 3 hours on hold to ISP demanding to know where the DSL speed I was paying for was and saying inappropriate things to recorded call que.... Then mocking the poor idjit in the overseas call center.. Nothin changed.. could not connect at all for about 5 minutes after "Max" got done with me..(or habib or whatever)... made it in record time.. usually takes about 4+ hours for them to take a report.. ok mebbe i kint taste the rum.. but I kin sure feelz it :D Cobras fang.. two blurry thumbs up Janice |

I just read an article in the latest issue of Fine Cooking Magazine. Tiki drinks are "in" again - they are all the retro-rage. |

some people are starting to refer to them as "boat drinks".. .. *sigh* kids these days. There is something about the fruity flavors and the "okay till you stand up" effects that are endearing and memorable. Some of the rums which taste either like syrup, or vodka.. not so endearing. The inherent tackyness of tiki makes for a fun if not authentic atmosphere, which is unique to the realm of tiki bars. but the drinks work even outside of those environments. If they become the "new thing" again.. they might lose some of their appeal. Ahh well. I will try to scrounge up another concoction tomorrow. Janice |

All right... this is rumored to be the FIRST "Tiki" drink. Sumatra Kula 0.5 oz fresh lime juice 0.5 oz grapefruit juice 0.5 oz orange juice 0.5 oz honey-mix (equal parts honey and water, warm up to mix, let cool and bottle, keeps in the fridge for about a week) 1.5 oz light rum 1 oz rhum agricole blanc(substitute 10 cane?) 3 oz crushed ice Put everything in blender, saving ice for last, blend at high speed for no more than 5 sec. Pour into a pilsner glass, add crushed ice to fill. Garnish with a mint sprig. _______________________________________________________________________________ Happy mixing. Janice |

I think the original Tiki drink was kava. Kava is an island drink. the "tiki drinks" and "tiki bars" are not authentic polynesian in any way/shape/form. The drinks include ingredients from all over the world(very very little from polynesian sources) and the bars seldom have much "authentic" to them either. But they do manage to create a festive and relaxing atmosphere. Janice |
