Oops... New Zealand Ministry of Civil Defense is warning of up to 1m waves along the entire New Zealand east coast.

Won't cause damage, but that'll certainly knock you over.

I wouldn’t expect to see much of anything in Hawaii. In deep water, this will just be a little 2 or 3 foot ocean swell while normal tidal and weather forces produces much larger swells. (I’ve sailed small boats through swells as large as 30 ft without much trouble. Exciting, yeah, but not particularly dangerous.)

It is when these tsunami swells hit the shallow water of a continental shelf that things get ugly. Then, all the energy gets concentrated into one place.

Hawaii has no shelf around it so the raise in water levels will be less than the normal tide.

That's why I grabbed the Honolulu feed--
but I thought they could be more "powerful" facing the epicenter...

It is not so much which direction you are facing so much as wave height and wavelength. In Hawaii I wouldn't expect anything more exciting that watching the tide roll in.

[edit] In fact, if the initial estimates are right, it already passed Hawaii.

Just had a thought:

As has happened after the Haitian earthquake a few months ago, we will all be bombarded with requests for money for earthquake relief.

Which is good, just be careful which organizations you give money to. This sort of thing appeals to the scam artists and criminals who use it as a way to take money from folks who think that they are doing good.

Stick with long established relief agencies (personally, I recommend the UN, but that is just my bias) and look carefully into the creds of any organization before you had over your donation.

Nope, Hawaii emergency relief is well rehearsed, and well oiled. They know the drill, they know the construction, they know the recovery. Thx to past Tsunamis, and that a forewarning system is possible, and that officials have zero tolerance for complacency creeping in....

No idea if this will be 1ft or 8ft.... but I do know this will be one of Hawaiis finest moments for the year in terms of human response.

Sorry for the misunderstanding: I meant Chile earthquate relief. There isn't going to be much happening in Hawaii beyond a ripple anyway. (Which probably passed their way an hour or so ago).

Yeah, but my warning was about low-life people who take advantage. If Chile asks for relief or not is moot: the requests from agencies (some real, so bogus) will come.

Don't think you understand the nature of a tsunami wave. That will be a 1 meter tide that lasts 15 to 30 minutes and re-occurs for a couple hours would be a better description than wave.

Last time there was a big quake in Chile, Hilo flooded. Pearl harbor acts as an amplifier.

I said or claimed nothing. It all travels through one medium, the media.
I only stated what I had heard and saw on the broadcast.
