Signs of life in CA. Got a few fresh ones, and the status page has updated - but now the scheduler's down for maintenance. Still, Kudos for the extra Friday shift - donations don't usually stretch that far.

Extra Friday shift? I was under the impression that these were normal business hours. Are they still doing furloughs or something?

Matt, at least, is very rarely in the lab on a Friday. He has a night job (plays in a band) which supplements his income - it pays better, and is probably more fun, than working for SETI.

Edit - in fact, here he is, today: New band photo

Never mind, yes, according to this today is a furlough Friday. So is next Friday and the one after that.

Sounds cool, but I'm not following you. How does having a night job playing in a band equal not being in on Fridays? Are you saying he sleeps in on Fridays?

Composes? Rehearses? Chills out? I dunno, but that's the way he arranges things. He has a blog.

I don't keep close track, but during the time I've been around here, Matt has worked fewer hours and more days, more hours and fewer days, he's worked Sundays and fewer weekdays, and in general his hours seem to be cast in jello, not concrete.

I'm sure the same is true for others at the project, they just aren't as visible.

... and we know that if something breaks on a day when nobody is in, and the problem can't be fixed remotely, someone usually finds their way to the lab sometime and fixes it on their day off.

For those thinking this is odd, U.S. Labor Laws say that if your company sets your working hours they have to pay you overtime. If you are exempt from overtime, then you set your own hours consistent with getting the job done, whatever that might be. This is primarily research, and some of us "customers" are around at all hours of the day so "interacting with the public" isn't a consideration.

All I was trying to say was that logically, not being in on Fridays does not follow from having a night job in a band. If the statement was "He plays typically Thursday nights in a band and is up really late," then I could see it. That's all I was saying.

I suspect it's more like this:

Matt: "I want Fridays off."

Management: "'k."

(as an aside: he doesn't always play in the S.F. Bay Area, I know he's in L.A. once in a while)

"Message from server: (Project has no jobs available)" on several of my crunchers.

At least there are some generous people out there. Somebody detached a 32-core SUN SPARC-Enterprise just as the WUs ran out, and donated 400 tasks to the common good.

Man, that guy has two 64-CPU, two 32-CPU, and two 8-CPU Suns. Wish I had that kind of hardware to monkey with.

There seems to be a glut of used Sun equipment out there. If I lived in Ohio and could have picked this stuff up myself (and had a spare $300 laying around) I would have snapped up this:

I'm surprised this auction got no bids...

All Validators are down looks like a good time to store some points. My only worry is do they have enough storage space for the unvalidated results ??

Regards

Right now the assimilators have almost half million results to do, as long as they don't catch up, it's actually not important for the amount of free disk space whether the validators are running or not.

Not much going on in validation land apparently....my creds have not advanced much in the last hour, and that does not bode well for the servers....

Sending email to Eric now.

A look at the Server Status Page confirms that bruno has shed it's validating duties....
