More commentary and a good summary:

On the High Seas, a Mix of Danger and Bumbling High Jinks

Reality television can be rough. ...

I guess there is a lot of scope for whatever view you might wish to take from what is essentially a bunch of untrained volunteers that have less than a month to get up to speed before coming up against the Japanese who now might be weary but who are also very practised from each year's encounters...

Utterly DISGUSTED with the Japanese whalers and their corruption!

There is more of the story yet from when the Japanese whalers rammed and sank the Ady Gil:

Whales' guardian in court and in prison

Anyone who followed Whale Wars (Animal Planet, 9 p.m.) this past season knows that midway through what seemed like just another cycle in yet another outdoor reality series, things turned serious.

The controversial campaign by Paul Watson's Sea Shepherd Society to stem Japanese whaling in Antarctica -by blocking Japanese vessels from loading whale carcasses aboard a factory ship designed to "research" whale meat -always had the potential to turn nasty.

There may be TV cameras aboard the Sea Shepherd Society's two ships, but Antarctica is a long way from the rule of law and the coast-guard ships that patrol southern waters...

...And this is quickly coming full circle to overlap a repeat this year. Meanwhile, what will come of the Australian legal action against Japan?...

How quickly a year passes, and how very quickly Sea Shepherd has gained in strength. All with continued passion and determination:

From whaler to whales' saviour

A FORMER Norwegian whaling ship, docked in Melbourne this week, has been transformed into an anti-whaling specialist...

Sea Shepherd Unveils Interceptor Vessel to Target Illegal Whaling

At a Hollywood fundraiser on Saturday night, we shared with supporters that the Ocean Adventurer will be part of our fleet for our upcoming 2010-2011 Antarctic Whale Defense Campaign, Operation No Compromise.

The 12-year-old, 115-foot, stabilized monohull vessel would fill the role of fast interceptor, replacing the Ady Gil, the vessel that the Japanese whaling vessel Shonan Maru No. 2 deliberately rammed and destroyed on January 6th of this year. ...

The revamped whaler certainly looks the part and has reserves to keep with the Japanese for months.

As for their replacement for the Ady Gil, anyone else agree that it looks more like a Klingon Warbird from Startrek?

Well... Full credit to his determinism... Pete Bethune will be back!

Bethune plans new, bigger Earthrace boat

Anti-whaling activist Pete Bethune is developing a new multi-million dollar high-speed trimaran to replace the Ady Gil, which could be patrolling the world's waters chasing down poachers.

Bethune, who spent four months in Japanese prison this year after taking part in a bitter anti-whaling protests in the Southern Ocean, which saw the Ady Gil sunk after colliding with a Japanese whaler, said he spent time in prison thinking about requirements for a vessel to work solely on marine conservation.

Meanwhile, is there any progress in the (Japanese stonewalled) stalled investigation into the collision and sinking?...

And now added to at least part of the mix is the Avatar star Michelle Rodriguez:

Avatar Michelle Rodriguez star joins Sea Shepherd

Rodriguez said she will be on board Sea Shepherd’s flagship vessel MY Steve Irwin when it sets sail at 4pm today for Hobart where crew plan to replenish supplies before heading to the Southern Ocean in December.

The trip, dubbed 'Operation No Compromise', will be Sea Shepherd’s seventh mission into the frigid waters of Antarctica to try and stop the slaughter of whales by Japanese...

From earlier this year:

Well, I think this image sums up from which side the aggression came from for the collision. I guess the helm for the Ady Gil was too slow or too disbelieving or the engines to slow to respond to get out of the way. Note also that the helm for the Japanese ship turned very hard to starboard to turn into the Ady Gil at the very last moment...

See:

Japanese Whalers Ram Sea Shepherd Ship Ady Gil

(Looks like the Sea Shepherd site is slowly recovering from an onslaught. Their site slowly loads now for me in the UK.)

The final blasting of the stricken crew with water cannon was rather a nasty final blast...

I think the Japanese have gone way way OTT with that one, regardless of any claimed provocation.

Utterly disgusted!

Many months later and despite the Japanese refusing to cooperate in any way whatsoever, New Zealand has carefully done the diplomatic thing:

Ady Gil and whalers both at fault for collision: inquiry

An exhaustive investigation by New Zealand authorities has found both Japanese whalers and Sea Shepherd activists at fault for the Ady Gil collision in Antarctica.

The whalers' security ship, Shonan Maru No. 2, should have kept clear of the Ady Gil under international collision regulations, and had ample opportunity to avoid hitting it, the Maritime New Zealand inquiry concluded.

But MNZ also found the Ady Gil failed to take avoiding action, and its helmsman did not see the Japanese ship bearing down until seconds before the impact...

Whaler should shoulder blame, says Bethune

Anti-whaling protester Peter Bethune says he believes a New Zealand inquiry should have put more blame to a Japanese whaling ship for a dangerous collision in the Southern Ocean earlier this year.

The investigation found the skippers of a Japanese whaling ship and a protest vessel were responsible for the collision.

The clash resulted in the whaler, Shonan Maru II, slicing off the bow of the Ady Gil...

Its report says the Japanese skipper could have avoided the situation, but when he did not the Ady Gil master Peter Bethune failed to take evasive action.

Mr Bethune says overall, the report by Maritime New Zealand on the collision in January is fair, but he says he never expected such a huge ship to run him down...

Sea Shepherd to blame for collision

TOKYO - JAPAN on Thursday insisted that Sea Shepherd anti-whaling activists were responsible for a collision between a protest boat and a Japanese whaler, after New Zealand took a neutral stance on the case.

And it looks like we're all set for round 7:

Michelle Rodriguez ready to save the whales

TOUGH chick US actress Michelle Rodriguez is not your average ambassador.

While most celebrities fly in and out after one day for a hefty spruiking fee, the Avatar star is spending a week at sea learning the ins and outs of life on a ship as part of her quest to save whales off Antarctica...

Full marks for the continued determination from Sea Shepherd.

What is it going to take for Japan to honourably cease being the number one focus for the destruction of the oceans? If we can't save a few whales, then what?...

Utterly DISGUSTED still with the Japanese corruption!

Many months later and despite the Japanese refusing to cooperate in any way whatsoever, New Zealand has carefully done the diplomatic thing:

Ady Gil and whalers both at fault for collision: inquiry

At last, here are comments from Paul Watson (Sea Shepherd) and Pete Bethune (now Earthrace Conservation):

Maritime New Zealand Report Concludes Captain Pete Bethune's Negligence Contributed to Collision

... Under international maritime law, the Shonan Maru No. 2, as the overtaking vessel, had an obligation to keep clear of the Ady Gil, the stand-on vessel, and it unequivocally failed to do so. Similarly, the master of the Ady Gil, Captain Bethune, had a responsibility to take action to remove his vessel from a dangerous close quarters situation and had ample opportunity to avoid the collision, but failed to do so.

The MNZ report concludes that the collision could have been avoided were it not for the actions and inactions...

Just as on the Star Trek movie "The Wrath of Kahn", it looks like Pete was caught 'with his pants down'. In the Youtube video from the Ady Gil, it does look that they were completely uncomprehending that the Shonan Maru 2 captain Komiya Hiroyuki would run them over. I was certainly shocked by such malevolence.

And yet the report 'diplomatically' assigns only half the blame on the attacker, Shonan Maru 2!...

Bethune starting new conservation group

... "I'm not setting up in competition with any other groups - it's not as though there's a shortage of bad things happening.

"My goal is to see Earthrace Conservation work both independently, and alongside existing organisations wherever and whenever they'd like our help."

Bethune's boat the Ady Gil was cut in half after a collision with a Japanese whaler in the Southern Ocean in January.

"Whether it's a good or a bad thing, everything that has happened this year has given me a profile. I'd rather use that to help ensure the future of our seas and oceans by getting out there and doing something positive than by getting a job behind a desk."...

Ofcourse, no useful comment from the Japanese perpetrators.

Good luck to Pete. There's certainly more help needed all round.

Video from the recent first encounter for 2010 - 2011 show just how agile the Japanese harpoon boats are. To my mind, Captain Komiya Hiroyuki and the helmsman of the Shonan Maru 2 were the ones in control of the situation that caused the collision that lead to the sinking of the Ady Gil...

The Discovery Channel have a series of clips from the days before and after the sinking. Here's one example of sheer brilliance in flat calm conditions and a good example of why it wasn't attempted against a Japanese whaler:

Just to wrap this one up for anyone stumbling across the thread...

Things turned out to be rather eventful, and many whales were harpooned and drowned in an protracted agonised death. Also, many more whales were spared:

Epilogue

Unlike it's predecessor whilst on duty for Sea Shepherd, The Gojira survived for further campaigns:

The Beast Transforms into a Beauty as Godzilla Becomes the Brigitte Bardot

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s fast interceptor and scout vessel the Gojira (Godzilla) helped chase the entire Japanese whaling fleet out of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary earlier this year. It was quite funny to have the Japanese media report that the whaling fleet was fleeing from Godzilla. But as frightening as Godzilla may be, there is one thing far more terrifying – Godzilla’s lawyers.

Sea Shepherd was served with a notice to remove the name from our vessel. This is not really a problem since the Gojira served its purpose in routing the Japanese fleet so they can quite willingly retire the name. In the meantime...

Epilogue #2: So what ever happened to Bethune after the sinking of the Ady Gil?...

Looks like he's trying hard to get his new project of "Earthrace Conservation" running and has recently paid a visit to the Faroes:

"from Pete Bethune in the Faroe Islands"

GRINDING TO A HALT

“So will you be hunting whales this summer”, I say to Thor, a local Faroese whaler who has finally agreed to speak with me. ...

I hope all the groups now putting the Faroes in the spotlight can do so in a useful and coordinated way. This has just got to be a good chance this year to stop or at least greatly curb one of the big outdated whaling atrocities.
