What should the i7 be at idling? I had just enough time to download Speedfan and monitor the temps for a bit before I decided to shut my new rig off permanently until I get a few things sorted.

My temps were 35-40C - just idling.

That is OK mine was at 35 idle but it is winter here. Also it takes a few cycles to get A5 set. Temps should come down a few degrees.

Wow my i7 920 runs at about 32-33 degrees celsius after running for about 15 hours. My EVGA GTS 250 runs at about 43 Celsius max...

It's winter were you live. My ambient temps are alot higher than yours currently. Plus the AS5 hasn't set in yet, as hiamps noted.

Just trying to find a way to justify my temps... ;)

Those are good temps ,intels run hot anyway, usually idle will be about 30/35 c just be sure to have the best air heat sink you can buy if you do not want/afford water.

About 69c max for most OC'd i7's........I would be surprised if anybody holds up a higher temp on a heavily OC'd i7.

Unless you count the Frozen Nehi.......i7 at -32c. Meowza.

Probe II shows the core at -11c. The puck is at -32.7.......

I have a Gigabyte EX58-UD3 motherboard with 2.67GHz i7. Min temps are in the mid 30s C and crunching temps are mid 50s C, with occasional 61 C at full load. (I don't crunch at 100%).

Mark, how high are your overclocks on your i7's?

I find all the temps very interesting and I am sure it has helped some that may have been concerned. Seems the i7's can run a bit hotter than most other chips and many hit 70C without any problems. And it seems the most popular speed for i7 920's is 3.8 which is incredibly easy to hit with this chip. I think Intel got it right this time out for all us cheapsters to have a fun chip to play with. I wonder if their faster chips clock as well?
For someone thinking of building a new machine this is the chip to get for bang for the buck. And for my overclock I just did a google search for "P6t SE Overclock" and even found pictures of my bios with all the settings, don't even have to know how to overclock.

When comparing your temps to intel specs you want to compare the chip, not core, temps. They rate the whole chip to a specific temp. So even if you are only using 1 core the whole chip is going to get so warm. I am sure the cores have a documented limit, but I haven't been able to find that kind of info yet.

Hi,
so these are my temps, under water:

Very like my temps, except I'm running 28MHz slower and using air. Try lowering the vcore a bit, if you can, or raise the bclk a notch and see if it stays.

@Luke

Changed CPU Clock to 200 and CPU Multiply to 19, resulting in DDR 1600 (My XMP Ram), lowering Vcor to 1.21.
Have a look to the TDP.
