Wow, so a school helped another school. He probably saved them money...the main problems I ever have with computers usually happens when they are restarting after being shutdown. He probably saved them tons of $200 an hour so called computer experts. I never turn off my machines.

Does this mean we're not going to have to worry about a shortage of workunits anymore? :-) Sure hope they let him do a graceful detach before they shut everything down. Would hate to think of all those workunits sitting there waiting to time out. Wonder if there is any way for the SETI team to detach him from their end of the pipe?

I would be highly surprised if even 1 computer at the school board there is still crunching SETI; there are probably tens of thousands of detached WUs. His RAC has been plumeting so it looks like the crunching was stopped very soon after he was walked out the door...

Not right away. We'll see how many WU are available in 7 weeks when all of his abandoned tasks expire.

he was probably getting massive amounts daily since his RAC was well over 100k and still is after he's been cutoff. I'd say theirs going to be a decent increase in available WU's

Well... it's very sad news actually.
I hope those who feel any kind of happiness for "more tasks for others" will rethink their approach a little...
It's huge decrease in project performance in first place.
Also it shows big change in attitude to project from "officials".
On early stage it was honour for company to be SETI sponsor.
Now they will pursue for helping SETI...

@NEZ
Truly hope you will be able to defend yourself!
You did great share of work...

I think we all feel bad for Nez, just trying to make light of a bad situation.

Raistmer his main problem was he didnt ask to have BOINC/seti on those computers. Heck I think his profile should be removed and burned in internet effigy. As much as he processed work, he's partly damaged the reputation of BOINC and seti. Even though the Seti/BOINC folks clearly state that users must have permission to run the program some will still see this in part BOINC/Seti's fault. Had he owned or had permission and the district changed its mind I could understand the sadness towards him. He screwed the pooch.

True, we do feel bad for Nez. Wonder if it was a case of getting permission 10 years ago and now a different administration has called him on it? Probably just stuck his head in the door and asked Hey boss, mind if I run this SETI thing on our computers? And his boss answering Huh? Yeah, yeah, whatever!

I am not sure I feel bad for NEZ..........
Although those computers did indeed contribute a large amount of computational power to the Seti project.....I hope the bad publicity does not outweigh it in the coming months.

I sincerely hope that anybody else in his shoes will rethink what they are doing and set things right.

And it sounds like he had more troubles brewing than just running Seti on unauthorized computers.

He damaged reputation of district's administration only :P

A little food for thought for the admins........
Quoting from the Cafe thread on this subject.

My response to this post by skildude....

" whats bad for Seti is that they demonize seti as much as the actual perpetrator. Perhaps a call from the seti/BOINC staff to the news sources telling them their rules that were clearly not followed."

Actually, a preemptive press release from Seti might be a very good move at this point.
It would clarify their position and possibly spin this into a little positive publicity.

Depending on the pecking order. As the admin he could have been his call to install/run the software.
Buying equipment that was beyond what the school may have needed (spending more tax payer money then needed) is really the only issue I would see.

At least one of the articles said that BOINC/SETI@Home interfered with one of the instructional software packages that was used in the classroom.

That doesn't have to be true. It was perceived to be a problem, and perception is reality.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened. This is an article about someone getting fired way back in 2001 for installing the distributed.net client at another school: http://openp2p.com/pub/a/p2p/2001/07/10/mcowen.html
