We are a nation of doers. We don't sit around and wait for someone else to take care of something for us.

That's a joke if I've ever heard one. Then why don't you do something about Global Warming? You didn't ratify the Kyoto protocol. And it don't seem your gonna' change much at the Copenhagen summit either.

I love America, I really do, it's a great country. But you can't just say that when this stares you straight in the face.

Because it hasn't been warming in the last 10 years. We are not going to be conned (I hope). We also have been leading the world in producing technology to make more efficient use of energy and we are using the same amount of energy we did 40 years ago despite the increase in population. By the way, Europe uses the same amount of energy and has the same usage curve. The rest of the world is another story. Their usage was about the same as ours 40 years ago but has doubled and is on the way to tripling. Just because every body hates us is no reason for us to commit economic suicide. Now I am in favor of using more Atomic power, but Obama, the Darling of the world has ended that dream. He has shut down our waste storage area making it dumb to build any new reactors.
We have been leading by example but no one has noticed.

There's always a reason. You can't just hate something for no reason. Also you cannot compare America to Europe. America is a country, Europe is a continent.

The hate us for the same reason I was picked on in school. We are different, we don't strike back over small things, we try to live by high standards but we don't force others to follow and we have few others defending us. We are the perfect big easy to hit target. Everyone wants to be number one, but they don't understand the price tied to it.
The only reason I mentioned Europe is that I had numbers on them and I feel they are setting a good example as well. I suspect much of their success is due the the fact that they use more atomic power than we do, but how they do it is not as important as the fact they are doing it.
PS About 10 years ago, one of your fellow country men came up here for a 3 month vacation. We got to know him well and if he was representative of your country, I would enjoy a vacation to your country very much. He reminded me of the better part of our country.

Well, I like America. It's a nice country. Germany, however, is phasing its Nuclear power out.

You as a citizen might be trying to live by high standards but your corporate and military interventions in other nations have caused untold deaths and suffering worldwide.

You should take a look at your numbers. When you total what is delivered (not just promised) by private and government sources, we are the heavy lifters in that area. We don't mind if if we don't get recognition, but calling us cheap is going a bit to far.

This might be an interesting read even though it goes against what you believe.

Hi Robert, that may be true but we have our own disease here:

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/montreal/story/2009/11/22/pq-french-marois.html

It's unbelielable that in this so-called multi-cultural country we can be legally charged for writing business signs in larger font English or speaking too much English! At least the Americans have a melting-pot that basically forces their peoples to coexist together without these petty squabbels. You live in BC so you are isolated from the seperatist agenda.

I'm not a gun lover but I do wish that Canada embraced the American melting-pot ideology ...

Hi Nick, it seems our problems in Canada may be somewhat less violent than the problems of another nation.
I might question your proposition that the American melting pot can force people to coexist without petty squabbles while we're posting in a thread that asks if you'd shoot someone in the street.

Seems to me that the melting pot doesn't eliminate stupidity, racism or this holy war mentality.

We are a nation of doers. We don't sit around and wait for someone else to take care of something for us. This is why were were the first to throw off the chains that England had on us. In the last election, I agree we may of been stupid but not racist. As for holy war, we didn't shoot first. You are talking about something that caused more deaths that Pearl Harbor. In any other military, you give an order and it is obeyed. In the US military, you need to explain why. On the other hand, America is the first country to offer a hand to someone in need.
I can prove I have fired over 100,000 shells and I have never killed anything, however if it came down to defending someone from a crime, I would do it.

Oh dear....you speak of the chains of England, yet it was the English, who threw them off. Were not the 'colonists', English, as you would have it? As someone who served in the RAF, I also take issue with the 'blind obedience' that you claim are the sole realm of US Forces - in the UK Forces, any person can question orders and refuse to carry them out, if they believe those orders to be illegal orders. For my sins, I'm also familiar with the FN-FAL (SLR, we called it), the GPMG (similar to the BRNO 0.303 of WW2), the SMG (aka Sten/Stirling....ever seen a silenced one in action, as per the SAS?), Browning 9mm auto pistol, Browning 0.32 auto pistol, the trusty 1911 pattern Colt 0.45 auto pistol, S&W 0.38, Webley-Martini rifles of different calibres, various Tokarevs, Makarovs and Stetchkins, Ingram M10 and finally (although I may have left some out) the venerable AK-47. Oh, and Pearl Harbour, I think you'll find that the US was warned about that, by the UK....before it happened!

Your real knowledge of history is worryingly remiss and your 'observations' on the Middle East, are indicative of what may be going wrong. You speak out of ignorance, about things you know nothing of. Well, here is one for you... more UK troops, were killed in Iraq (Desert Storm) by US Forces, than by Iraqi Forces! Does that mean that the USA is an enemy of the UK? Has it declared war? You tell me. If you have not killed anything, after firing 100,000 rounds, you are either a very 'bad shot', exaggerating or wasting ammunition!

Even by 1776 we were becoming a melting pot. The largest non-English part of our population was black slaves. While we were English subjects we had formed an American identity because we didn't have the rights of an Englishman.
I am sure all free world countries teach the people in their military to question illegal orders, however Americans are known for questioning simple every day orders if they don't make sense. I am sure some American officers get frustrated not having all their orders instantly understood.
As for Pearl Harbor, I never heard about the specific warning from the UK, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. On the other hand, we were reading the Japanese diplomatic code and saw the declaration of war a day before we received it from the diplomats. America has had a bad record in the intelligence field and we are currently in the process of destroying the CIA again. On the other hand, the UK is a master at handling the spy game. James Bond is nothing compared to some of the things England pulled off in world war II. I am sure there are also many cold war stories we haven't heard because the are still classified.
For two countries that had such a rocky start, the UK and the USA have grown very close over the years, It's somewhat upsetting the way it seem that Obama has snubbed your country by not understanding your country has traditions that are not to be changed or questioned. However you shouldn't feel to bad about it because Obama doesn't understand the American people either.
The biggest problem in the middle east is that they have been at war for a long time before England or the USA got involved. In fixing one problem, we tend to cause another. Iraq kept Iran in check and now that Iraq is weak, Iran is now out of control. Israel was a fix, but it caused trouble with the countries surrounding it. There is no simple solution to the problem.
Iraq was a big mistake and we shouldn't have gone there. Iraq was not involved in 911 and because we had made our CIA ineffective, we weren't able correctly evaluate Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. While I think Bush wanted to clean up his fathers unfinished project, I don't think he would have if he knew there wasn't a weapons of mass destruction program.
People have a hard time understanding that firearms can be used for things other than killing things. My poison is American Trap. Clay targets are quite dead before they are thrown and I have yet to find a recipe that can be use to prepare them, however they are are both fun and frustrating to break. Before you say that's easy, try shooting a target moving at around 55 miles per hour with an effective pattern that's two feet in diameter at a distance of 40 yards with one shot per target. Most people shoot for a long time before they break 100 in a row. I am a fair shot but may never be great because the doctors inaction resulted in me being a one eyed shooter. Both eyes work, jut not at the same time.
I have shot hand guns as well but because I can flinch with hot loads, the 1911 looks like it's the best hand gun for me. As for rifles, I am still making up my mind as to what I like.

Sorry Iona, you're wrong, the UK did not warn the USA 1st with regards to Pearl Harbour, it was an American newsman approx a decade earlier but he was ignored.

My reply to the OP's orginal post is............

Lets not forget that about 1/3 of the non slave population in America at the time of the revolution was German. They weren't all that excited about taking up arms against the Brits hired guns, The Prussians. Of the non German population only about 1/2 were really for a revolution. the rest, Tories, were pro British. The American revolution took only 1/3 of the population to make it happen. I look back at text books that make the revolution look and sound like an overwhelming majority of the population was revolting when it just wasnt so.

OK folks.......have a go with this one.

Are you a Democrat, a Republican, or a Redneck?

Here is a little test that will help you decide.

The answer can be found by posing the following question:

You're walking down a deserted street with your wife
and two small children.
Suddenly, an Islamic Terrorist with a huge knife
comes around the corner, locks eyes with you,
screams obscenities, praises Allah, raises the
knife, and charges at you.

You are carrying a Kimber 1911 cal. 45 ACP (me, a Springfield XD40), and you are an expert shot.

You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family. What do you do?

..............................................................

THINK CAREFULLY AND
THEN SCROLL DOWN:

Democrat's
Answer :

Well, that's not enough information to answer the question!
Does the man look poor or oppressed?
Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire
him to attack?
Could we run away?
What does my wife think?
What about the kids?
Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock
the knife out of his hand?
What does the law say about this situation?
Does the pistol have appropriate safety built into it?
Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind
of message does this send to society and to my children?
Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me?
Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be
content just to wound me?
If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my
family get away while he was stabbing me?
Should I call 9-1-1?
Why is this street so deserted?
We need to raise taxes, have paint and weed day and
make this happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior.
This is all so confusing! I need to debate this with
some friends for few days and try to come to a
consensus.
