Anyone ever have any luck getting Boincview to run on Linux?

The icon appears in the "task bar", but it locks up and GNDN.

The error is:

fixme:systray:wine_notify_icon unhandled tray message: 4

I'm using:

wine-1.1.24

Linux sonic 2.6.29.6 #2 SMP Mon Aug 17 11:58:18 CDT 2009 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P7350 @ 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Slackware 13.0 / 64Bit (+32Bit Multilib)

You would be better to compile the linux version of the BOINC client on your computer. WINE does not offer the right level of access to the processor plus all the overhead of running the application in an emulated environment.

There are pre-packaged versions of BOINC client including some with the visual client. I'm not familiar with Slackware's package management (if any) but Fedora, SuSE, Ubuntu, and Debian all have clients ready for apt-get, yum, and zypper.

If your distribution uses a package management check if BOINC comes up in a search.

Sorry, I did misread... I thought you were referring to the BOINC Client.

From WineHQ it appears you are running what they are considering an unstable version of WINE. 1.0.1 is the current release marked as stable. However as of this writing 1.1.29 is available.

I would be guessing at best, but it looks like the BoincView program is issuing a command to to re-establish it's original window and WINE doesn't understand the command.

I would first try to upgrade to see if the latest edition works and if it doesn't then try a downgrade to the stable version of WINE.

I have used other apps that minimize to the system tray (uTorrent) and come back up just fine. So I would imagine this might be a bug with BoincView and something that would need to be brought to the attention of the developers.

Not only is there a Linux version available on this site but I have managed to run Windows Boinc with Wine last summer with no issues to take advantage of the new and much faster AK_V8 optimized app which was originally developed for the Mac platform and was ported to Windows a month or two before being ported to Linux.

Maybe I just had all the right stuff out of the box on Ubuntu.

Edit: I'll check what version of Wine I have when I get back home and post it here.

This is getting a little off topic, but, Ubuntu does a lot of fine tuning of their apps so I wouldn't be surprised if an application runs a little better on Ubuntu installation with WINE than another distribution.

I'm also not stating you can't run Windows BOINC under WINE in Linux. Just performance wise, the client isn't going to crunch the data as fast as it would if it was compiled for Linux. Native Linux applications can talk to the hardware and OS directly where as an application running with WINE requires WINE libraries to talk to rest of the system.

Back to the BoincView issue. I'm attempting to download the ISO for Slackware and install it under a virtual machine. I accidentally grabbed the 64 bit version since I was looking for a single disk install ISO. Didn't notice they had both 32 bit and 64 bit. Otherwise I would already be trying to attempt to recreate or at least give more educated advice as to the issue at hand.

I was going to suggest trying Wine version 1.0.1 (what I have) but a closer inspection reveals that its is actually version 1.0.1-0ubuntu6. I don't have any other distributions on my systems (on x86 at least) to try on but I remember ruining Boincview on Fedora 6 more than a year ago.

I have nothing left to contribute at this point.

Going off topic again but I have an interesting comment on the subject:

The AK_V8 seti client was such an improvement that until the Linux version was released the Windows version on Linux with Wine was faster that any available native Linux client.
