Vista on a single core Centrino/M ?

Gross......although you neglected to mention how much RAM and if you are running 2GB, then anything is possible I guess. ;)

I had Vista Home Premium 32bit running on an old single core Pentium 4 2.53GHz with a 533MHz FSB and 1GB of RAM. It ran decent, but it helped out a bit when I upgraded to the max the motherboard supported: 2GB.

Well the machine is maxed out with ram.... at 1GB....

It is faster then my old 2.4Ghz P4 machine. Tho I'm playing around with OCing because I think it should be faster then the notebook! LOL
Currently it's stable at 17% OC with stock voltage & OEM HSF. Justh ave to see if it can prove it's metal against the notebook now.

Centrino notebooks, if using a Pentium M will be far more powerful than a Pentium 4. My Pentium M 745 (1.8GHz 2MB cache) Centrino notebook can get about a 400 - 500 RAC using optimized apps running 24/7, but I don't run the laptop much anymore.

The M/Centrino is a good platform.

In regards to it's standings against a P4, it has been shown time and time again that the average M/Centrino compares to a P4 at approx 2x it's clock speed on average (Centrino/M @ 1.5Ghz = P4 @ 3.0Ghz in layman's terms.)

I always wanted to buy a 2Ghz chip for it, but I could never find one at a decent price. At this point I'm looking to upgrade it to get a notebook with HDMI out to get a better connection to my 61" TV.

That is something I noticed right after I got the notebook. As I had a 3Ghz P4 for my main machine then. There were a lot of "no way that can't be true" and "wait... that's done already" moments.

Exactly. That is one of the reasons that Overclocking Socket 479 CPU's was so popular for a short time.....people were unable to get a TRUE 4.0Ghz performance on a desktop CPU, but 2+Ghz on a Banias was common ;) (giving the equivilant of about 4.0Ghz or so when compared to a Socket 478 Desktop 'Northwood' P4).

My home server uses a T7200 Core 2 Duo Mobile processor. About 2 years ago the MoDT platform was rather popular but seems to have died off now. It sure would be nice to upgrade that system to a T9900, but I would need a new board as the Abit il-90mv only supports a 667 bus.

Ok I bit the $49.99 bullet and pre-ordered Win 7 upgrade from Amazon with Free Shipping, It was too good a deal to pass up, I would have ordered two, But that's more than I feel comfortable spending right now. :D

I am very (im)patiently waiting for them to release Win7 via TechNet. My new 1.5GTB HDD just arrived yesterday and I'm dying to install it! :)

On pins and needles waiting for it. Word is that Steve Balmer will be announcing at his keynote at the 14th. I also heard a nasty rumor that technet wouldn't be getting it until July 24th.

I'm watching for it....

Well that kinda sucks. I paid almost $20 extra for overnight shipping to make sure it would get here before Monday or Tuesday and now its not going to be released until Friday of next week? I could have gone with the free ground shipping. :(

I'll just have to keep watching too...

I don't understand why Windows 7 is so great.....and everyone is in such a hurry to jump-ship from Vista in favour of it.

I love Vista x64.

More power to them, I say. Somebody has to be the guinea pigs for bugs and security patches ad-nauseum. I paid my dues with XP and I am staying with it, for now.

Besides, what would I do with my 5 1/4 inch drives and all those floppies??? LOL!

I love Vista as well. I don't think of it as "jumping ship", rather Win7 is simply Vista v6.1, so its merely a slight improvement on an already strong foundation. Not to mention there's a few features in there that I think are a real plus that can help me with my day-to-day productivity.

I paid my dues over my entire usage of the Windows Operating System, or the Windows shell program (Windows 1.0 -> Windows ME), and every copy of *nix I've ever tried and got frustrated over.

I don't mind being a guinea pig, I enjoy playing around with the latest tech, which is what makes me such an excellent geek.

for me it is actually just getting it so we can start testing our drivers at work and get things certified. Personally I don't care for Vista or Win7. I only use Vista at home for the DX 10.1 support.
