There has been some discussion on PCI CUDA cards. They do exist, but usually in the lower power versions like the 8400, 8600 range. They also seem like Hens Teeth and not many places stock them.

So that would be like a pig with lipstick and hens teeth. :-)

But back to the original question, yes you can crunch just fine on a PII, PIII vintage machine. Just for laffs I have a PII 450 with 196mb of ram running Windows 2000. It crunches across 4 different projects and gets a RAC of about 80.

Like the others have said, turn off Astropulse, but with an optimised app it should still turn a normal work unit around in a day or 2, so no problems.

Your RAC, a measure of computating, shows you can gain some with an opti-app!
And/or CUDA enabled GPU cards (8800/9800GT{X} etc. Probably 1 667 is enough to drive a 295/280/etc. GPU?!

My QX9650@3.7GHz. takes 0.11CPU to drive a 9800GTX

You'd be unlikely to even find a card for that PC. If I recall very few PIII level Mobo's came with AGP 4X slot. forget PCIe. Do they make a PCI CUDA? Heck the Video card would use more power than the rest of the computer. I'd avoid the though besides he said he's got the PC and just wants to run it for seti. It be like putting pearls on a pig.

I just have a PIII running XP/Home that I just taking up space. I do not pay for electric here and running it to help SETI might be nice, since it was my first SETI machine. Between my 2 gig server and my slow PIII, it could help, even though the PIII would take 3,4,5 times as long and not do Astropulse either. It is an old Compaq Presario that I bartered some tech work for. She got me to setup her new computer and I got her old one with 17" monitor for free. Since I had a 500MHz that would not run more than 20 gig drives, and this one did 40 gig easily (100 gig was max then, it was a good deal.

I remember when 10MEG was a large drive, since most people only had single or double floppies at the time. I have been using (working with) PCs for a long time and feel that if you got an old one that still works, you should use it.

So 2 gig server, maybe 667Mhz PIII Compaq Presario, also I might get my spare 1 gig AMD Athlon XP/pro laptop and my 2 gig Vista Home/Premium involved part-time.
