When BOINC tries to get more work for SETI it gets a error that the core client is out of date and I need to upgrade. I tried to detach and reattach Seti thinking it would download the "upgraded" seti program but that didn't work. I don't think that the BOINC Core Client is old; I have Beta Version 4.05.

You need to upgrade your BOINC software. Version 4.09 is current, a newer version is imminent. On the SETI website, click on Participate in SETI@home, then select Upgrade your BOINC software. BOINC upgrades are not automatic.

I am no expert, but I thought BOINC was designed to update itself when a new version is released?

Otherwise, beyond sharing my screensaver activity among multiple projects, why have I switched to BOINC? New releases are made constantly, I don't receive an email notifying me of updates, my version quits working until I manually download the update (of course I don't know my version has quit working unless I check the BOINC messages tab regularly).

I just downloaded 4.09, it starts up and the first thing it does is download 4.05 (which I "was" running). Once it finishes downloading 4.05, it sets that version to running.

I don't understand.

There are 2 bits of software the Core (Currently 4.09) and the Seti Client (Currently 4.05), allthough the version numbers are similar, they dont really have anything to do with each other.

The Seti bit WILL auomatically get upgraded for you
The Core wont (yes they should send an email when required but do not)

The idea is that once it works, the Core is never changed, and the individual science projects release new Clients whenever they like.

You are right to be confused, unless you follow the winge boards closely (and there is no reason why you should have to). It has allready been suggested that the version numbers should be totally differant.

Seti@home software is 4.05, this gets autoupdated
Boinc is 4.12 now (untill yesturday it was just 4.09) isnt autoupdated, you just need to install the new boinc client over the top of your current boint install and it will autoresume doing work. the only times that the boinc software is updated is when there is a bigfix or a feature implemetation.
